Next week on May 11, it will be 1 year since an Israeli soldier killed my beloved aunt, the trailblazing Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Here’s what happened over the last year since she was killed. 🧵
Day 0: On May 11, Shireen is reporting while wearing a clearly marked press vest and helmet when an Israeli soldier shoots and kills her.

Day 2: At Shireen’s funeral, Israeli police assault mourners, including her pallbearers, causing her casket to fall.
Day 4: The US offers its “deep condolences” without taking any steps to hold Israel accountable, even though Shireen was a US citizen.

Day 30: A month after killing Shireen, Israel has faced zero accountability.

Day 54: The Biden administration issues a statement on the 4th of July, adopting the Israeli military’s propaganda on Shireen’s killing.

Day 58: We write to Biden asking him to meet with us during his visit to Jerusalem, only minutes from our family home.

Day 65: @POTUS refuses to meet with our family.

Day 75: My family and I travel to DC to demand in person that the US hold Israel accountable for killing Shireen.

Day 76: We meet with @SecBlinken in DC, who refuses to commit to a transparent and independent US investigation into Shireen’s murder.

Day 78: Members of Congress including @RepAndreCarson, @RepRashida, @RepAOC and more join a press conference calling on the US to hold Israel accountable.

Day 79: We leave DC without any meaningful action from the U.S.

Day 100: Our family continues to call on the Biden administration to open an investigation into Shireen’s killing to hold Israel accountable for her killing.

Day 117: Israel issues a statement attempting to obscure the truth and avoid accountability for killing Shireen. Still no action from the US despite repeated calls from major human rights organizations and journalist associations.

Day 132: Our family travels to the Hague to submit a complaint to the International Criminal Court to investigate Israel’s killing of Shireen––a war crime.

Day 183: I testified in front of the @UN_HRC human rights council about the killing of my aunt and Israel’s brutal attack on Shireen’s funeral.

Day 188: After six months, news breaks that the FBI opened a criminal investigation into Shireen’s killing.

Shireen was our dear aunt, sister, and friend, but she was also a US citizen. One year after her murder by an Israeli soldier, we won’t stop demanding that the US hold Israel accountable so that we finally see #JusticeforShireen.
