“What the fuck is bonding and why should I care?” Soap replied nonchalantly, his mouth half full of food as he picked at the bowl in front of him.
“No speaking with your mouth full.”
Laswell scolded from where she was sitting, smacking the back of his hand with the spoon she was holding. “And watch your language.”
“Ow.” Soap grumbled, holding his now injured hand as he screwed his face up at her.
“She’s right, you are a royal John.” Nikolai hummed
from where he was sat across the table from them. The three of them were the first at lunch that day, as the years passed everyones training sessions seemed to get longer and longer.
Soap missed his friends, honestly. It had been so long since they had just… hung out.
but when it’s your job to save the world some things have to be sacrificed.
“Royal.” Soap scoffed. “Royal of what, Nik? Last I checked Makarov wiped my entire kingdom out. I was a baby! I’ve never been a royal.”
“You were born to the king and queen, that makes you royal.”
Kate informed him. “That’s how it works.”
“Ugh.” Soap groaned, letting his forehead fall against the wooden table. “Can we go back to talking about bonding or whatever the hell this old man was on about? I hate royals talk.”
“Well it’s something we need to talk about.”
Kate started. “If you’re going to successfully re-build your king-“
“You actually have never heard about bonding before?” Nikolai interjected loudly, shooting his best friend an apologetic look.
“No. Sounds dumb.” Soap mumbled, moving to lean his chin on his hands.
Yet his attention was still on his mentor anyway, the young dragon shifter clearly just wanted to stop all talk about his royal blood.
“Well, it’s sort of hard to explain.” Nikolai started, putting his cutlery down. “Bonding works for everyone with magic, most of the time.
However it seems to be easier for shifters and hybrids. I think it’s because technically we are closer to our elements because we are closer to nature in our animal forms.”
“Is this just some sort of history lesson?” Soap groaned. “How is this supposed to help me?!”
“I haven’t even got to the best part yet! Wait your damn patience.” Nikolai scolded. “I think you’re the worst student I’ve ever had.”
“I know.” Soap finished with a shit eating grin. “Continue.”
“Well, bonding is exactly what it sounds like. You bond with someone else
and it heightens both of your magical powers. You basically become unstoppable.” Nikolai explained.
As those words left his teachers mouth, Soap’s eyes began to light up.
Just the thought of being stronger made him excited.
“So me and Gaz could bond and finally beat
Farah?” He asked, tilting his head ever so slightly.
“First of all, doesn’t work like that. Secondly? You’ll never beat her.” Nikolai sighed. “Bonding is more of a personal thing…” He trailed off, looking at his student for a long moment
to see if he understood but Soap still looked rather confused.
“For bonding to work the pair need to have a strong relationship with one another.” Nikolai continued to explain. “The stronger your feelings for each other, the stronger your powers get.”
Soap screwed his face up again, rolling his eyes as Nikolai spoke.
“Oh so it’s a LOVE thing.”
“Not exactly.”
“So why CAN’T I bond with Gaz?” The young dragon shifter asked pointedly. “None of this makes any sense !”
“Bonding doesn’t just happen.” Kate finally interjected.
“You can’t chose when it happens either. You just have to put all your trust and love in one person and the elements will make the connection for you.” She finished, a small smile forming on her face. “Why do you think Price and Nik got stuck together?”
Nikolai let out a hearty laugh at her words, looking back down at his food.
“Johnathan was still telling me he hated me when it happened.” He mused.
“Why are all these old magic laws so dumb.” Soap muttered. “How do we even know when it happens? Is there like a rainbow
or something?”
“No. You’ll feel it.” Nikolai nodded.
“This is so dumb.” Soap muttered again.
“You’ll understand when you’re older.” Kate chuckled.
“I hate you both!” Soap nearly yelled. “I’m sick of you old people and your stupid metaphors and weird ass stories and-“
However the sound of the door opening cut him off, thankfully the rest of the group had finally arrived for lunch.
“Why do you looked like someone spit in your food?” Gaz asked as he approached the table, basically falling into the chair next to his best friend.
“I’ll tell you about it later.” Soap muttered quietly. “Another stupid story.”
“I’m sure it is.” Gaz laughed, before he broke off into a long rant about his training session that morning.
Soap wasn’t paying attention, though. Of course he wasn’t.
He couldn’t.
Because Ghost had just walked through the door.
The young knight was laughing about something with Alex, a smile stretched wide across his face.
Soap couldn’t deny the way his heart fluttered just at the sight of him.
It had been a few weeks since their initial flight together and they hadn’t talked about it since. But god Soap was yearning for that feeling again.
He couldn’t deny the thoughts that rushed through his mind as he stared at the knight.
Maybe this whole bonding thing wouldn’t be so bad… with him.
Nikolai did say it had to be some one you cared about…
But he had also said a bond could only be between two individuals with powers.
Ghost being powerless had never been a problem to him, he loved him
regardless. But now he felt an empty pit in his stomach.
They could never bond.
He hadn’t cared about bonding all that long ago… but now it hurt.
“Hey! Are you listening?” Gaz shouted, dragging Soap back to reality with him.
“Yeah I am! But just in case, repeat that?”
Soap said, a sheepish smile on his face as he desperately tried to ignore the knowing look Nikolai was giving him from across the table.
Nikolai was never on board with this plan from the start. He hated kids, he had always hated kids.
Especially kids with magical powers.
They could never control themselves properly and he hated being accidentally set on fire.
But Kate and Price gave him no other option, his fate was sealed the moment he had to carry that child out of her burning city.
Now here he was, stuck alone on the top of a mountain with four kids under the age of five years old while his husband and best friend
travelled into the city to meet with the king.
He had argued with them for a solid hour about why he was the worst choice for babysitter, considering he didn’t even want to do this in the first place - but they wouldn’t even hear it.
