Lots of speculation about events in Bakhmut, so here are my two cents:

1. It’s possible that Wagner stays at least some time longer, but in face of coming counteroffensive and w their exhausted forces, its not a bad time to bow out and let someone else claim the failure.
2. Other Russian PMCs do not have the manpower, equipment, structure, or leadership to take Wagner’s place, at least not immediately. MoD could cycle field commanders off dissolved Wagner to other structures, but that takes time & doesn’t mean immediate battlefield effectiveness
3. It’s unclear to me exactly what role Wagner would even be suited to play during UA counteroffensive. Their best option would likely be return to form, running sabotage and harassment like they did in UA in 2014-2015.
That requires far less men and involves relatively less risk than grinding assaults - but Ukraine is a very different adversary than they were 9 years ago, and Wagner has lost a lot of its human capital.
4. In terms of what happens with Prigozhin, it is not yet possible to say. His best bet is likely to focus on his Africa ventures but I think he would have a hard time settling for that. Ukraine was a momentous opportunity to go beyond his business to date. Sunk costs etc.
Prigozhin has crossed virtually every red line in rhetoric except criticizing Putin himself or the choice to invade. It’s too early to say what will happen to him. Girkin is still around, after all.
We shouldn’t overestimate Prigozhin (he has no coalition, the concept of him being Putin’s mouthpiece feels a bit too involved to me), but he has established loyalty in certain quarters.
There are paramilitary and patriotic types that have been struck by his anti-elite narrative. To Prigozhin’s credit, he is out there on the front. He might live in a lavish mansion and his family might have spent a lot of time in Europe but that’s no bother .
Prigozhin seems to still have Kovalchuk in his corner (though I don’t know if he would stick his neck out for him), and some folks within GRU and Southern VO. He could pull through this, but without an active role in the war effort, his tune would have to change.
It’s interesting that he has peeled of Mizintsev but there’s simply too many things we don’t know about how that went down. It seems to me like a big snub to MoD but it could also be a way to put him out to pasture.
Ultimately, this going to come down to whether Prigozhin’s PR crusade ends up pitting him against the state. He has been intentional to go over a sort of “fifth column” rather than the system, but at what point does that become too threatening to system itself?
Prigozhin can’t challenge Putin for a range of reasons, but he could create visible rifts among elites in wartime that at the very least see him separated from his fortune or prosecuted. This would be messy and I’m sure leadership wants to avoid it if possible.
Wagner is still useful even if their numbers are reduced. It’s a recognizable brand that has an important role to play in mobilization. But if Prigozhin does more harm than good for recruitment, that can change.
Prigozhin has tried very hard to conflate himself with Wagner. But ultimately, he needs Wagner more than it needs him.

Prigozhin announces that Wagner is withdrawing from future involvement in Ukraine (with some caveats), takes credit accomplishing all objectives in Bakhmut, blames MoD for further failures, says Wagner leadership would never join MOD.

While he says he isnt interested in being lauded as conqueror of Bakhmut, only “ambitions to benefit our people and our state.” He goes on to say that main objective was to expend UA forces and clear path west towards Kramatork etc which he says they accomplished.

2/
He says Wagner will now retrain in Russia - confusing phrasing as he says they will “remain until threat is gone,” and then says “in the event of a threat, Wagner will stand up for the motherland.” I take this to mean he’s saying they are effectively in reserve.

Kadyrov leaning into his offer to take over offense on Bakhmut while Prigozhin publicly supports it. Kadyrov says he is coordinating with MoD, claims to have fighters already en route “despite all kinds of stuff about some terrible counteroffensive.”
Here is Prigozhin’s letter to Shoigu asking for clearance for Akhmat to take over Bakhmut assault. Image
Prigozhin previously published this video where he describes conditions in Bakhmut (which he dubs “Wagnerland”) - claims Ukrainians don’t want for artillery, have drones, foreign-produced armor, etc.

Kadyrov comments on Prigozhin’s attacks on MoD: Says MoD should meet Prigozhin and resolve shortage, as he has also experienced these supply issues. Also criticizes Prigozhin for his attacks and showing dead soldiers. Finally offers to take over assault on Bakhmut w Akhmat forces Image
(This seems like posturing. Claims Akhmat could take remaining territory of Bakhmut in hours are laughable, and Kadyrov has demonstrated he does not have the appetite to employ his forces like Wagner has.)

Prigozhin publishes text of his announcement of withdrawal from Bakhmut on May 10. Follows his video statement and includes an timeline of events that is intended to make Wagner look like only effective Russian force in the war

1/ ImageImageImage
Prigozhin’s timeline:

- they were asked to take part in invasion on March 16
- pulled fighters from Africa on March 19 to meet this ask
- Wagner chose their own objectives “where defenses were strongest”

Prigozhin shares graphic video of Wagner fighters killed today, with the most furious message he has yet directed personally at Shoigu and Gerasimov. “Shoigu! Gerasimov! Where are the fucking shells!”
“Look at them, you bitches! (…) you sit in expensive clubs (…) your children make YouTube videos (…) you think you have the right to dispose of their [Wagner fighters] lives (…) they came here as volunteers and died so you could gorge yourselves in your offices.” Image
Prigozhin has shared images of dead Wagner fighters before, and has blamed MoD leadership for their deaths with varying degrees of directness, but this goes beyond any of that

Wagner mouthpieces claim that recently sacked Russian Deputy Minister of Defense for Logistics Mikhail Mizintsev accepted offer to become deputy commander of Wagner. This video shows him talking w Wagner field commander Elizarov, discussing tactics & wearing a Wagner patch.
Pro-Wagner TG channel Grey Zone says that Mizintsev was one of the few who sought to help Wagner with shell hunger. He served in role as Deputy MoD since September. Sunday Times nicknamed him the Butcher of Mariupol for commanding the siege of that city. t.me/grey_zone/18515
If true, this is a major PR win for Wagner and a huge middle finger to MOD. Even his appearance in video talking on “equal footing” with Wagnerites and bearing the “KIA we are with you” patch is a bold statement.
