📣 Are you disgusted by @RepKeithSelf (#TX03, including Allen, TX) shrugging his shoulders and saying that not only can't we do anything about mass shootings but that *we shouldn't even bother* since "God is in control of our lives?"
Well, I have bad news and good news. 1/
The bad news is Self won by 23 points last year. The odds are he won't be beatable in 2024.
The GOOD news is that there are 19 *other* GOP-held seats which ARE winnable next year, and Dems only have to net 5 of them to flip the House. Donate today: secure.actblue.com/donate/housebl…
These 19 GOP-held seats are rated either Tossup, Lean R or Lean D by @CookPolitical, and all 19 are on my fundraising page. Donations go *directly* to the Democratic nominee: 3/
Re. “Dem Nominee” funds, here’s @actblue’s page on them. They hold the $ in escrow until there’s an official Democratic nominee, at which point they transfer *all* funds *directly* to their campaign accounts: support.actblue.com/campaigns/cont…
Nominee funds are only available for federal races, and only for seats held by Republican incumbents.

Overall, however, it's a mixed bag--some things are better, some things are worse...and of course there's a big difference between "is life better/worse FOR ME" vs. "is life better/worse for PEOPLE LIKE ME" vs. "is life better/worse for people IN GENERAL."
For instance, *globally*, infant mortality is lower, literacy is higher, poverty is lower, etc etc.
But most people don't think about whether humanity *as a whole* is better/worse off; it's generally about whether YOUR life is better/worse. vox.com/the-big-idea/2…
📣 HEY EVERYONE LOOKING TO MOVE TO MASTODON *OR* SPOUTIBLE:
I know tools like Debirdify & Movetodon are gone now thanks to Musk, but @scafaria has come up w/a new tool which helps you find Twitter users who have accounts on both Mastodon & Spout!
WhoSum is a Chrome extension which scrapes your follower/following lists (or anyone's, really) & stores an archive of accounts with Mastodon accounts in their bios/profiles...but it also lets you search for accounts w/URLs w/*any* phrase, so it works for Spoutible as well!
As a browser extension it takes a few more steps to set up (you have to pin the extension to your browser header, for instance), but it's very easy to use after that. He's posted a quick video:
Re. "following Mastodon accounts on other servers is difficult" I'm not sure I understand. Here's a search for "george." Notice that @GeorgeTakei, @georgehahn and @GeorgeLakoff are each on a different server, but they all show up. Just click on one and you can follow them.
Now, that's using the Elk.zone interface, but here's what it looks like on the default Mastodon site. Same thing...in fact, it's even easier to follow folks on other servers; there's a little button right there next to their name.
Update: OK, thanks to @MainStreetMuse for helping me realize the issue, and it's a real one which may be inherent in @joinmastodon being federated/decentralized: 1/
...is simply inherent in having a federated/ decentralized structure.
If you want every account to appear & have the exact same address, that means they'd all have to be on the same server. Since Mastodon is decentralized, that means multiple servers, the way email works. 2/
The question is whether you want a single (hopefully benevolent) dictator with control over everyone or a bunch of smaller (hopefully benevolent) dictators w/more limited control, but the ability to move between dictators if you wish.
What to do about accounts you follow which are paying for their blue check?
As @NeilOza13 notes, some people's livelihoods depend on social media algorithms--in fact, I fall into that category myself; a LOT of my site traffic comes via Twitter, so I can understand the dilemma of not wanting to help Musk but feeling like you need the visibility... 1/
...and as others have noted, some of the OTHER features (edit tool, etc) are OK to charge a small monthly fee for (not $8/mo but the $3/mo pre-Musk made sense).
It boils down to making you pay for "verification" WITHOUT ACTUALLY VERIFYING YOUR ID that's the problem. 2/
In all seriousness, I wonder if anyone could seriously sue Musk for libel? He's making a false claim about me by stating that I may be paying him monthly when I'm not.
Or does the "may be" let him weasel out of that?
Made a slight profile edit.
