Kwong was born in Vernon, B.C. on June 17, 1923, two days before Canada enacted the Chinese Exclusion Act, which prohibited Chinese immigrants from entering Canada.
As a child, Kwong often faced racism.

At one point, he was denied service at a barbershop because of his ethnicity.
Kwong began playing hockey on the frozen ponds around Vernon & became one of the top players in the area.
He began to play for the Trail Smoke Eaters, who had recently won the World Championship

While other players were given high-paying jobs at the local smelter, Kwong was denied this & worked as a bellhop at a hotel.
In 1946, Lester Patrick saw Kwong play and was impressed and he signed him to the New York Rangers farm team, where he became a star player.

On March 13, 1948, Kwong became the first person of Chinese heritage to play in the NHL.
He played one minute in the NHL & was sent back down, never to be called up to the NHL again.
Despite his skill, other players were selected for call ups instead of him.

Kwong continued to play hockey & found a great deal of success. With the Valleyfield Braves of the QSHL from 1948-1955, he averaged a point-per-game & led the team to the Alexander Cup, the top senior hockey trophy in Canada.
Kwong died in Calgary on March 15, 2018.

Today in 1920, Barbara Howard was born, and this is her story!
Born in Vancouver, she was one of the fastest sprinters in Vancouver growing up.
In September 1937, she completed a time trial, and broke the British Empire Games record in the process.

As a result, she was given a spot on the Canadian team for the British Empire Games in 1938. She is believed to be the 1st Black woman to represent Canada in an international athletic competition.
It took 28 days to get to Australia for the games.

At the Games, she won a silver and a bronze. Unfortunately, the Second World War broke out, effectively ending her track career due to no international competitions.
After high school, she trained as a teacher & began to teach in Port Alberni.

He was not hired by the law firms he applied to due to anti-Semitism. In order to be called to the Bar, he had to article with a lawyer who was a member of the Bar but anti-Semitism made this difficult.
He finally articled with a young Jewish lawyer named Sam Gotfrid.

From 1940-1965, Laskin worked at the University of Toronto.
In 1965, he joined the Ontario Court of Appeal where he ruled spousal support was a right under the Divorce Act.
When the Supreme Court considered the matter, they cited his ruling in their unanimous decision.
This is the story of Lord Gordon-Gordon, the conman who nearly caused an American invasion of Canada.
It is not known where he was born, or what his name was, but he was possibly the child of a family maid and clergyman in England.
He 1st appears as Lord Glencairn in 1868

In March 1870, he moved to the United States & started calling himself Lord Gordon-Gordon. After fleeing the country due to defrauding several people, he arrived in Manitoba in 1872/73 where he offered to buy tracts of lands in the province to bring prosperity.

Jay Gould, who lost $1 million to Gordon in America, tried to have Canada hand Gordon over but the government refused.
As a result, Guild & several others came to Canada & abducted Gordon. They were soon arrested by the NWMP, put in prison & refused bail.

It happened from February to June 1921 and was an informal race with three teams walking across Canada. There was a father and son, a husband and wife (pictured) and a lone man who decided to take part in the race.

Canada was dealing with inflation, labour unrest and unemployment. This race gave many a welcome distraction at the time.

Jennie and Frank Dill from Windsor.
Charles Burkman from Whitewood SK.

The three teams walked along the CPR tracks, with all three leaving from Halifax by Feb. 1.
They walked through snow, sleet, rain and high winds. To make money on the journey, they sold 10 cent postcards of themselves.
Typically the teams covered 30-64 km per day.

Susanna (Moodie), Catherine (Parr Traill), Agnes & Jane were born in England & educated by their father in a standard more usual for boys.

Agnes (pictured) and Jane stayed in England for the remainder of lives, where they wrote several well-respected books on history primarily.
Both Catharine and Susanna moved to Canada in the early-1830s with their husbands.
Prior to moving, both were accomplished writers.

Catharine wrote her first book at 16 in 1818 & averaged one book a year until 1832 when she married.
In 1836, she published The Backwoods of Canada, which is an important historical source about early Canada including the Indigenous people, the climate, flora & fauna.
