I designed the BD-Noculars and Beacons for #JediSurvivor with a simple player problem I had from J:FO—"I can see that spot in-game, but where is that on the map?"

What amazed me was how the team adopted and leveraged my idea🧵👇🏻

Oh, and here's a fun easter egg too😊 An in-game screenshot of St...A diagram showing the 5 Aur...
First and foremost, the UI/UX team helped me out a TON! @_DaanishSyed had the AWESOME idea for every BD customization faceplate to get its own custom BD-Noculars design.

I want Daanish to do a deep dive on these visual designs though because he put SO much detail into them. An in-game screenshot of St...
We always designed with accessibility in mind!

We were able to push the visual design limits because the player can always press Triangle to use the default binoculars.

Beacons colors are separated by common color blindness with triple encoding: shape, symbol, and color.
Another design goal of BD-Noculars was to leverage existing content and drive players toward it.

@jeffmagers, @jasondeheras, and @AaronContreras all helped push the idea of highlighting objects in-world and allowing shortcuts to the Databank, Tactical Guide, Holomap, and more.
One of my favorite features of BD-Noculars is being able to scan unknown enemies. It just feels so Star Wars-y and cool to scout out your enemy and get some tactical info on them before the encounter. At one point I found out BD-Noculars was being written into a real cutscene and I was all😳

@LouisMcTague and the Narrative team used the BD-Noculars to craft some cool moments where we give players control of the sticks, but also move the story forward as they highlight POIs.
Finally there's the Holomap side of the Beacons system where everything you can do with the BD-Noculars is also present in the Holomap with full parity.

A lot of BD-Noculars is just a utility tool to link players back and forth and close the loop on information.
The only reason BD-Noculars came about was because the leadership here at Respawn felt it was important to have Jedi Week. Jedi Week is where we're not allowed to work on what's assigned to us and instead can use the time for passion projects, career development, etc.
I chose to prototype BD-Noculars and then it was later reviewed and approved for full production. I got to pitch it to design stakeholders and also Lucasfilm! Nobody ever took the feature from me and instead everyone embraced it.

It speaks volumes to the culture we have here🧡
Clarification on this:

They're spaced out so common color blindesses always have at least one other color in between them. Red/green are not next to each other and neither are blue/yellow
