A “closed” upper level high has formed right in the same area where the big June 2021 heat dome developed. - Washington and BC

This is a pretty good explainer about the difference between a heat dome and a heat wave. Both can be deadly.

619 people died in one week in BC in 2021, directly as a result of not being able to escape the heat. Some died waiting for help that came too late.
This is your reminder that the two years later the BC Govt has done nothing to prevent the same happening again.
This is not rocket science. This is not a yet to be solved maths problem. This is quite simple. Air conditioners need to be distributed to low income people. Heat pumps should have been going in everywhere. People need cool, clean air to live.
Heat-deaths don't come close to representing the full extent of the harm that results from people not having access to mechanical cooling during heat. OD's, self-harm, & accidents are known to increase. Chronic illnesses worsen - sometimes there is permanent harm.

So apparently a new public warning I have to issue is that if a journalist or member of the media tells you they have spoken to me you should check with me to confirm before believing them.

Way to really fight back against that fake news narrative Canadian media. /s

It makes sense that the person would believe them because their article is based off of my work, but this "extensive" interview literally never happened.
I have contacted the editor. Depending on how this is handled I will either share the name or this will be an anonymous cautionary tale.

Ableism towards disabled people remains largely unexamined & thus still perceived as 'scientific' & 'common sense' but not only are other oppressions still upheld, it's important to remember ableism is ideological & rhetorical tool used in creating & maintaining other oppressions
So it's not useful to discuss disabled people as the 'acceptable' discrimination because the basis for our oppression is ableism and modern western ableism in particular, which is a creation of colonialism, Enlightenment, white supremacy, eugenics...
And how modern western ableism is deployed and who it targets and how, has changed over time and can change again. As long as it is exists, it is a threat and a means for constructing 'other.'

Seems like just last week certain high profile academics, politicians and pundits were accusing disabled people of disinformation and claiming it never happens. Now we're at, 'OK sure MAiD for poverty, lack of care happens & we're good with that.'
nationalpost.com/news/canada/ca…
They're calling MAiD "harm reduction"

"They see theirs as a harm reduction argument, that “the least harmful way forward is to allow MAID to be available.”
So they've taken a concept used by people who use drugs (disproportionately poor and disabled), developed to try to keep one another alive, and are applying it to killing us.

If you are wondering what stage of burn it down I'm at, I'm gathering the kindling.

Quick short thread. 🧵
Someone was very enthusiastic about these DIY a/c's so I'm going to offer some thoughts about why these aren't accessible or great option. I'll end with some of my suggestions.
First, I want to say I appreciate why this suggestion would be appealing. It's cheap and in BC especially there has been EXTREME resistance/refusal by govt to fund proper a/c and cost is prohibitive for mutual aid to make much community impact.
But here is the problem with them:
1. Even full-blown commercial room or window A/C struggles to keep up in really hot, humid weather. This one shows only marked temp change when measured right at output. So literally not just that spot in room but likely that spot of your body.

I don't support this. And I really worry this the white woo-woo middle class 'rewilding' of the city people are setting the stage for more of these bad outcomes for animals.
That terrible woman who objected to the paving of paths b/c she said the colour doesn't match grass - is a big proponent of this city's version of rewilding.
Me: So you think more human/wildlife interactions will work out for well for the animals?
ugh words. I'm tired. I just think that the Park Board had a specific plan brought in by these people that was designed to encourage more wildlife of all kinds - and then it always turns into shooting coyotes and killing geese. As if that wasn't predictable.
