One year ago today, an Israeli soldier shot Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the head, killing her while she was reporting in a clearly marked press vest and helmet.
Here’s what’s happened since.
Shireen dedicated her life to exposing Israel’s brutal oppression of Palestinians.
Known to many as “the voice of Palestine,” she was a household name beloved by millions across the Arab world.
After Israel killed Shireen, Israeli police attacked pallbearers at her funeral while millions around the world watched in horror.
Even in death, Shireen inspired unity among Palestinians and repression from Israel.
Then, Israel and the US brushed off calls for accountability:
Israel refused to charge any soldiers with her murder and the US never pushed to hold Israel accountable for killing one of its own citizens.
After months of pressure from the Abu Akleh family and 1000s of supporters, the US finally launched an FBI investigation into her killing.
But a year after her murder, the investigation hasn’t been completed, and Israel still hasn’t faced accountability for killing Shireen.
Israel cannot keep murdering Palestinians, be they legendary journalists or anyone else. That’s why we demand #JusticeForShireen and justice for all Palestinians murdered by Israel’s brutal apartheid regime.

2/ @SpeakerMcCarthy failed to cancel our event & silence the voices of Palestinian survivors of the Nakba. McCarthy's attempts to prevent Palestinians from sharing their lived experiences under Israeli oppression mirrors Israel's attempt to erase the Palestinian people.
3/ But as @4noura eloquently stated: "We exist. And today, gathered here we are collectively saying, Nahna mawjudin. It is of utmost importance to say that here because we are within the very institution that has sustained the ongoing Nakba."
THREAD: If you're a journalist writing about the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba and Israel’s establishment, here are the 6 things to include in your coverage.
1. The Nakba, or catastrophe in Arabic, is the root of the problem.
Israel violently kicked 3/4 of all Palestinians out of their homeland during the Nakba in 1948. It is the historic injustice at the core of Israel’s apartheid system in Palestine.
2. Include the context of the Nakba when covering the anniversary of Israel’s establishment so that you’re getting the full story.
Israel was built upon dozens of massacres and the systematic destruction of Palestinian towns.
THREAD: Bezalel Smotrich, the extremist Israeli politician with massive control over the lives of Palestinians in the West Bank, just admitted that Israel's official policy is to destroy Palestinian towns that connect large Palestinian areas.
Why? To end Palestinian sovereignty.
According to Smotrich, Israel destroys Palestinian towns in order to force Palestinians to live in completely disconnected cities.
Destroying Khan-Al Ahmar would allow Israel to connect an illegal Israeli settlement to Jerusalem and cut off Palestinian access to their lands.
Israel's policy resembles the US’ theft of Native American land, with reservations used to deny Native control over their own communities.
Or Apartheid South Africa’s segregated bantustans, forcing Black S. Africans into inhumane living conditions to steal their land + labor.
THREAD: This weekend, one of the most powerful politicians in Israel said that there’s “no such thing as a Palestinian.”
That kind of racism against Palestinians has deadly consequences.
At an event in Paris, Israel's Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said that Palestinians are an "invention," denying the existence of millions of people.
He is the Israeli politician with the most direct control over Palestinians’ daily lives under apartheid.
Smotrich made these latest remarks from a podium with a map of Israel on it that included all of Palestine and much of Jordan.
That's a flagrant admission of Israel's colonial ambition, an endorsement of Israeli theft of Palestinian land, and a slap in the face to int'l law.
