A major piece of the project to build housing for students and low-income residents in Berkeley's People's Park just fell apart. RCD, the nonprofit developer has pulled out, in part because @UCBerkeley's actions caused it to lose federal funding. berkeleyside.org/2023/05/11/peo…
When @UCBerkeley went in w/bulldozers in the summer of 2022, RCD hadn't finished its own EIR. The federal government said that violated guidelines and said the supportive housing project for 125 formerly homeless was no longer eligible for federal funds. That was a blow.
Cal says it will now look for another nonprofit developer. A major appeal of the People's Park project was creating housing for students AND the unhoused that the project was going to displace. Read @SupriyaYelimeli's story in @berkeleyside
For the record: The university has been trying to develop People's Park for more than 50 years. Defenders have fought every step. They are still fighting. There is no other piece of property in #Berkeley with such a contorted history.
