Ok. I’ve tried to answer this for more than a week & been overcome every time. 47 days have passed since my friend engaged a shooter in the hallway of the private Christian school where she was headmaster. The shooter murdered her. #CovenantSchool 1/
I am grateful that Kathy White, deaconess at @CPCnashville, spoke up about the need for meaningful gun reform. That she & the alumni of Christ Presbyterian Academy, where she & @DavidDark & I taught alongside Katherine Koonce, called on @GovBillLee to value children over guns. 2/
I am grateful for @DPCassidyTKC’s courage in speaking up, as any time a pastor speaks up on an issue like that, they risk being called partisan, too political, woke. But it wasn’t Pastor David’s first encounter with gun violence, & his conviction required his voice. 3/
I want to call the raising of those voices sweet, and yet I feel the weight of their lament. This is not the voice in the wilderness, but the voice of Rachel crying for her children, refusing to be comforted. It is heartbreaking. 4/
I am grateful for the voices of others speaking freely, because advocating for the safety of our children in schools, in malls, in houses of worship, is not a partisan concern. Should never be. 5/
I am horrified that as of this moment, nobody from @tnhousegop, @tnsenategop, or @TNGOP has publicly addressed members who claimed #CovenantSchool parents came to TN Capitol with pipe bombs & brass knuckles, that they were violent, or commented on their physical attractiveness.6/
It’s a weird flex for @TNGOP to claim they’re the pro-life party when their re-election depends on insulating manufacturers of weapons of mass execution and not the lives of children. There is no pro-life gun. 7/
I think that everyone in Nashville & Franklin whose lives were forever delineated on 3/27 into Before the Shooting and After the Shooting need to proceed with caution, to weigh words, to expect honesty. We must require it from all sides. 8/
I was invited to speak at a gathering of faith leaders a couple of weeks after #CovenantSchool, ahead of a march. I spoke about my family, about how my great-uncle adored me. He always told me I was smart, always told me do my best, always bragged on me. 9/
This uncle owned a bar, & frequently he would send out customers too inebriated to safely drive.
One night as my family drove home from church, one of those drivers hit us head on, his car plowing into & over us, destroying our car.
That we survived is a miracle. 10/
My uncle never spoke of it. Not to my parents, who were renting a duplex from him at the time & were expected to make rent even though they were shopping for a replacement car. Not to me, though he loaned my dad the money for my semester of study in London 30 years ago. 11/
As the #CovenantSchool families navigate these days, there will be many officials with all the power necessary to protect children’s lives, who will profess love of Christ, conservative values, & still act as though their hands are tied, as though it’s just business. 12/
Every time any of us touched by the #CovenantSchool shooting allows them to pretend that they care for our loss, while they delay remedy for any reason, we are co-opted into a theater whose purpose is to distract and deflect while the slaughter of innocents continues unabated.13/
That theater includes any attempt to frame the #CovenantSchool shooting as the action of a trans person bent on destroying Christians. It’s a lie that has been used to drive social media engagement & ad revenue & steer people’s terror away from the fact of their lives at risk.14/
I will not engage in this pretense, this notion that church leaders & officials have secret knowledge of why it’s impossible to restore the common-sense gun regulations we had in the 1990s, including the assault weapons ban. There’s no secret knowledge. There is only life. 15/
Anyone who asks us to focus on a manifesto, on the shooter’s sexuality, on personal liberty or anything else, is asking us to pretend along with them that a gun is more valuable, more sacred, more holy, than a child’s life.
Raise your voice.
Children over guns. It’s time. /f

The thing about #CovenantSchool that should scare every last Tennessean is no matter how exclusive your private school, no matter how Christian, no matter how armed the teachers are or how well-prepared staff are, a shooter can still kill your kids, & @TNGOP won’t help you. 1/
In fact, if you enroll your kids in a TN private Christian school, & teachers are armed, & active shooter prep exceeds police expectations, & a shooter *still* kills children, you don’t *dare* approach your @TNGOP supermajority on your children’s behalf. 2/
Because if you petition your @TNGOP for the sanctity of your children’s lives at school, even a well-prepared teachers-armed exclusive private Christian school, & even if you are nonviolent & sing gospel songs, you will be called a violent extremist. 3/
A state official came at me in my DMs over the weekend b/c I RT’ed a post about an issue I’ve advocated around for 7 yrs & it’s made me pause on every post, QT, RT, or like since. Will they see this post? This RT? Will I get a letter from an attorney? Another angry DM? 1/
They know health information about my son that i don’t want made public. If I RT this post about them, will they tell the public my son’s most personal information? Will they say a word & my husband loses his job, our health insurance, our home? 2/
B/c of their party’s use of entertainers who bring Proud Boys to rallies, I’m afraid to leave my dog in the yard. Those entertainers have HQ just a few miles from my home. Will Proud Boys show up in my yard? 3/
Why on earth would *anyone* in Christian leadership think highlighting sexual abuse in public schools to say “see, clergy sex abuse ain’t so bad” is appropriate? It is *never* ok for even one child to be sexually abused by clergy. This comparison endangers children in church.
Look at the engagement this is getting. PCA influencers & an editor for PCA polity amplifying, drawing more shocked folks. The result is distrust in public schools…but worse, the growing sense that sexual abuse in our churches is over-hyped. This is dangerous. 2/
The article linked in the 3rd post in the thread, & the source of the 1st post’s claim that US Dept of Ed found 5-7% of teachers sexually abused students, is below. There’s a bit of irresponsible math going on here. 3/ sites.law.duq.edu/juris/2019/03/…
One Black man hugs a crying white woman & the whole damn lot of them show up.
Let’s spell out what this means. 2 weeks ago, my friend #KatherineKoonce was murdered as she tried to protect her students & colleagues from a shooter. 2/
#CovenantSchool is housed at #Covenant Pres Church, a Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). The church was founded in 1990 by Christ Presbyterian Church (CPC). School started 20yrs ago, inspired by CPC’s preK-12 school Christ Presbyterian Academy (CPA). 3/covenantpres.com/about/
This is why I talk about my friend #KatherineKoonce. @BillHaslam, who once spoke at @CPCnashville about how politics affects personal relationships, wants America to believe @tngop were as scared of peaceful protest as 9yos of actual gunfire. politico.com/news/magazine/…
In 2021 @BillHaslam toured TN on his book about “the redemptive role of faith in politics.” Now he’s sad nobody applauded his op-ed after #CovenantSchool massacre. There’s a reason nobody clapped. His words are cheap. chattanoogan.com/2021/8/30/4337…
@BillHaslam’s behavior & that of his @TNGOP colleagues echoes the abusive attitude I’ve become accustomed to seeing from SBC in response to widespread clergy sex abuse. Refusing to discus any responsibility, making himself & colleagues victims, when 7 #Covenant lives were lost.
For anyone saying the #CovenantSchool massacre has been hijacked by @brotherjones_ & @Justinjpearson, let’s just dispel that right now. @TNGOP refused to care for Nashville in our darkest hour even when the slain were friends of the highest officials. @GovBillLee abandoned us. 1/
Nobody worried it was about race when Tom Ingram, whose lobbying firm Ingram Group is running #CovenantSchool PR, told Charleston’s Black community “The next time something awful happens in places like Baltimore or Ferguson, I think we actually will remember Charleston.” 2/
It wasn’t by accident that the tv in the @tnhousegop-controlled legislature captioned @Justinjpearson as @brotherjones_. 3/
