The #Eurovision Song Contest takes place in the UK for the first time in 25 years! We're hosting as Ukraine, the winners of 2022, wouldn't be safely able to host 🇺🇦
But if you haven't tuned in since 1998, here's a rundown of every year you’ve missed!
Eurovision 1998 was the last time the 🇬🇧UK hosted the contest after Katrina and the Waves won in 🇮🇪Dublin the year before.
The UK was represented by the wonderful Imaani with 'Where Are You?' and the contest was won by Dana International with 'Diva'. 👏
1999 in 🇮🇱 was the first time the contest allowed people to sing in whatever language they choose. The UK has not won since...
Our entry was Precious (🤷♂️) but the eventual winner was Charlotte Nilsson with iconic euro classic 'Take Me to Your Heaven'
2000 in 🇸🇪 was the first to be broadcast on the internet. How very modern!
The winners Olsen Brothers with 'Fly on the Wings of Love' was actually contested by runners up Russia for using a vocoder.
The complaint was ignored... 🤭
2001 in 🇩🇰has the record for the most people to watch the contest in person with 38,000 people!
In another record, winners Estonia had their first (and so far only) win with 2XL and 'Everyone'.
Look it wasn't a great year ok! 😴
2002 in 🇪🇪 was the last time the UK was in the Top 5 of the contest, for the next 20 years, until 2022!
The winners were Latvia with Marie N and 'I Wanna', while not a terrible song the outfits were very questionable 😐
2003 in 🇱🇻 was a dark day for the UK as we came last with no points!
The winners of the contest were 🇹🇷 Turkey with Sertab Erener and 'Everyway That I Can'. Which is SO dramatic! 👏
2004 in 🇹🇷 introduced a semi-final for the contest as 36 countries decided to take part.
The winners 🇺🇦Ukraine, only their 2nd time participating, won by just 17 points!
Sakis Ruslana with 'Wild Dance' was QUITE the show 👀
2005 in 🇺🇦 was the 50th edition of the show. Interesting fact that the 'Big 4' of UK, Germany, France and Spain were the 🍑bottom 4.
Winners of the contest, Greece, won for the 1st time after 31 years of entering with Helena Paparizou and "My Number One"
2006 in 🇬🇷 had the milestone of the 1,000th song performed on the show.
The winners, Finland, were previously the ultimate underachievers of Eurovision coming last 8 times. But Lordi and 'Hard Rock Hallelujah' finally took them to victory! 🎉
2007 in 🇫🇮 the UK tried to go camp with Scooch and 'Flying the Flag', we came 2nd last ✈️
But the winners, Serbia, entered the contest for the first time and won. Marija Šerifović with 'Molitva' was also the first non-English song to win since 1998.
2008 in 🇷🇸 was the first time there was 2 semi-finals as 43 countries entered.
The winners, Russia, have one of the best records at Eurovision placing regularly in the top 5. Dima Bilan with 'Believe' was not a Cher cover sadly.
2009 in 🇷🇺 the UK decided to let Andrew Lloyd-Webber choose the act, and it worked (sort of!) - we got to 5th place!
But nothing could stop Norway, as Alexander Rybak and his violin performed 'Fairytale' winning 387 out of a possible 492 🏆
2010 in 🇳🇴 was held in the middle of the global financial crisis, therefore some big names like 🇮🇹 did not participate.
For the first time since 1982 Germany won with Lena and 'Satellite'. This marked the first time they'd won as a unified country. 🖤❤️💛
2011 in 🇩🇪 the UK sent boyband Blue and Ireland sent Jedward. It was a strange time, but Jedward came 8th!
In a first, Azerbaijan won the contest with Ell and Nikki performing 'Running Scared'. Jedward were robbed...
2012 in 🇦🇿 was one of major highs and lows. The UK entered Englebert Humperdinck for an insane reason, we got 12 pts.
But possibly the biggest Eurovision song since ABBA came from Sweden with Loreen and 'Euphoria', their 5th win 🙌
2013 in 🇸🇪 the UK sent Bonnie Tyler! Not the smartest idea as we came 23rd.
There's a real shift in this decade as the songs get way more catchy. Denmark won with Emmelie de Forest and 'Only Teardrops' for their 3rd win.
2014 in 🇩🇰 was a year defined by one person. Conchita Wurst 👸 🧔
Austria won with the James Bond style anthem 'Rise Like a Phoenix' by Conchita Wurst, a bearded drag performer. This was Austria's first win in 48 years 🕰️
2015 in 🇦🇹 was the 60th anniversary. To celebrate 🇦🇺Australia, longtime lover of Eurovision, was invited to perform.
But Sweden only went and did it again. Måns Zelmerlöw by 'Heroes' won a close battle with Russia, becoming a modern Euro-classic! 🕺
2016 in 🇸🇪 had one of the most powerful songs of all time. As Ukraine won with '1944' by Jamala talking about historical deportation of Crimean Tartars.
Also, Justin Timberlake was the interval act. We were quite perplexed too.
2017 in 🇺🇦 saw Portugal win the competition after a record 53 years of competing and not winning.
It was the second ballad in a row to win, with Salvador Sobral singing 'Amar pelos dois'. Bit of a calmer few years after the early 00s!
2018 in 🇵🇹 was a two way race between jury favourite 'Toy' and televote favourite 'Fuego'.
Israel's 'Toy' by Netta pulled out the win, bringing them their 4th win exactly 20 years after their 3rd.
2019 in 🇮🇱 the UK came last again. The 2010s really were a dark time for us.
'Arcade' by Duncan Laurence from Netherlands came out on top, making it the 8th consecutive win by a solo act! 🎹 👨
The Eurovision Song Contest of 2020 was the 1st and only one to be cancelled, ever.
But Daði og Gagnamagnið with 'Think About Things' from Iceland was the favourite. You know it from TikTok.
2021 in 🇳🇱 came back with a bang! Even Flo Rida showed up for San Marino, don't ask.
But it was Italy's Måneskin that came out on top with 'Zitti e buoni'. They've gone onto huge international success since, see it still happens! 🤩
2022 in 🇮🇹 was finally the end of the UK being at the bottom of the table! As @SamRyderMusic took us all the way to 2nd place! 🥈
But given the atrocities of the Ukraine war, Kalush Orchestra with 'Stefania' roared to 1st place with 631 pts!
2023 the #Eurovision final will be in 🇬🇧 as a joint show between the UK and Ukraine, tonight!
You're all caught up, and if you want a prediction on who may win this year 👀 👀

🚨 EXCLUSIVE: David Furnish, @eltonofficial's husband, has attacked the deluge of Brexit red tape and extra costs choking UK musicians trying to tour the EU, as the scale of the slump in British performers in Europe is revealed. independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
"New analysis shared with The Independent shows that the number of British performers playing festivals across Europe this year is one-third less than before Brexit."
"And the number of European acts playing at this year’s Glastonbury has plummeted by half compared to the years before Brexit, according to figures from the @BestForBritain campaign group."
🧵In my view the local election results analysis that I have not seen, is actually the simplest. Detail is great, but sometimes one can miss the wood for the trees.
It is this: The country is leaning towards broadly progressive parties by a crushing ratio of about 2 to 1. ~AA 1/
🧵The pool of votes to the right of the Tory Party, which in recent local (and EP) elections has been reliably a minimum of 10% and as high as 20%. It is now tiny, shallow, and difficult to fish. And yet Tories seem locked into culture war stuff. To attract whom? ~AA 2/
🧵This 2-to-1 ratio in the projected national share from the locals, is broadly borne out by GE voting intention aggregate polling, too. Regardless of how the precise arithmetic shapes up, 2-to-1 is hard to overturn. Especially if you're trying to fish the wrong pool . ~AA 3/
The date marks the anniversary of the historic 'Schuman Declaration' that set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable.
🧵Last night, hundreds braved the wind and rain in Parliament Square as the House voted on the #IllegalMigrationBill to make their thoughts on this hateful legislation clear: 1/
The impromptu #StopTheBill demonstration heard from former refugees and campaigners like @haoussou, who called on the Government to reject the Home Secretary’s nativist Bill and show solidarity with people across the world affected by conflict
.@Ntunasi reminded the crowd that the Government’s harping about ‘illegal asylum seekers’ grossly oversimplifies the reality of finding your way to a safe destination as a refugee
As Sunak backslaps in San Diego, this is a welcome intervention from @DanJarvisMP. A Labour Gov must bolster UK armed services "hollowed out" by the Tories & reassert British soft power
@DanJarvisMP In it, the former Mayor of South Yorkshire / former Army Major alludes to Best for Britain’s original research into the impact of Brexit on British musicians… ~ AA bestforbritain.org/tough_gig_45_d…
