I know it's super raw and no one is expecting anyone to act immediately, but, for those who need it, a thread on mid-career querying you can bookmark and read when you're ready:
First off, here's a post on it: dailydahlia.wordpress.com/2019/07/07/mid… This post is really more for if you're querying with a new manuscript, though, and I know that's not everyone's situation, but I think it's worth a read anyway.
Second, here's the Mid-Career Querying edition of my blog series Perpetual WIPs, where you can get details on a bunch of people's different experiences and methods with it: dailydahlia.wordpress.com/blog-series/pe…
But now, let's talk about when you find yourself unagented and you're in the middle of your career and you need representation to handle your work ASAP but don't have a new manuscript to query. (And agents, please feel free to chime in with best practices and preferences!)
If you're in the middle of your career, you've probably got a bunch of things going on. Maybe you have options coming up. Maybe you have subrights that haven't been shopped yet. Maybe you have a proposal for something. Maybe you have a significant portion of your next work. +
My advice: gather it all up into a neat list. Send a normal query about how you're seeking *new* representation, be upfront about not having a completed new manuscript, and then succinctly write out what you have to offer.
Another thing I did is included a link to a spreadsheet that had all my plans - story ideas, statuses, etc. - so we could pick up and talk about right where I was and wanted to be.
Also, you know that bio paragraph in your query where you were probably like "WTF do I write here?" when you were new? You're gonna wanna make good use of that. And yes, I'm going to recommend you link your website and make sure it's updated. Sorry. I'm still me.
Let's talk a little about what it means to "do your research" about an agent/agency, specifically what and how you can glean information even if you don't have access to a whisper network, bearing in mind, again, that it's never foolproof:
Okay, so the basic research tools for looking up agents/agencies are:
QueryTracker, where you can see what they rep, who they rep (or *have* repped), and generally get an idea of their response times.
Publishers Marketplace, where you can see their specific sales*.
*Sales are not required to be submitted to PM, and not all agents report all sales, or sometimes they submit a bunch at once - it's not exact, but it's the best we've got. (And presumably agents who don't report much aren't that hungry for new clients, bc it's kinda ad space.)
Bookshop's got free shipping today (and 10% off most books always!), so here's a random thread of books I love and recommend, and also a link to mine: bookshop.org/lists/my-books…
Looking for some creepy stuff this spooky season? Lamar Giles is alllways a good way to go, including his most recent chilling theme park dystopian, THE GETAWAY: bookshop.org/a/2943/9781338…
Wanna treat yourself to some fun and queer holiday romance? YOU'RE A MEAN ONE, MATTHEW PRINCE is a Schitt's Creek-esque delight: bookshop.org/a/2943/9781728…
This is the thread I was talking about. I really like this thread, and also wish more people would learn what blood libel *is* so they’d stop conflating it with blood magic.
In general the amount of “This is antisemitic!!” I’ve seen going around about stuff that patently is not is uhhh disconcerting? Because I know you mean well but all it tells me is you associate us with even more terrible stuff than the baseline.
It is true that a ton of storytelling is based in antisemitism because we were in fact very deeply hated when many of these original tales and tropes were crafted! It is not true that every vampire story is inherently antisemitic, and this discourse is incredibly weird to me.
I had the exact same thought yesterday, and in general this week as I had a couple of phone calls with pre-pub authors for various reasons. We truly horribly underprepare debut authors for so much.
And debut groups are great but they're also groups of people who all don't know the same things, all don't know what they don't know, and all panic over the same things because how can they not?
So, some stuff that may or may not come in your debut group, and debuts, please feel free to add your questions, and other published others, feel free to add your responses. (Since we're talking dealing w/publishers, this is specifically trad pub.)
As I sit here working my ass off on posts about queer books, I would just like to remind everyone that I also write queer books. And you can buy them!
Seriously, it's A Lot and I am trying so hard not to be annoyed about how much work I do for books by authors who don't even say boo about my own work but I am losing that Rising Above battle and I really hate it. (Yes, I promise I know no one owes me anything, thanks.)
But like, thinking about a whole bunch of people who've expressed gratitude for my blogging work only to completely ignore my book releases without so much as an RT, esp fellow queer YA authors, and I would just like you to know that you suck. But I will still promote your work.
Helllllloooooo it's Pride Month *and* my book comes out in six days, so prepare for me to be insufferable!!!!
I do have events coming up next week! Come join me at @BooksofWonder on June 7th at 6 pm EST to hear all things HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE, and order your book through them to get a signed bookplate! booksofwonder.com/blogs/upcoming…
*by "at" I mean virtually - no in-person events for this parent of an unvaccinated child just yet!
