Let's talk a little about what it means to "do your research" about an agent/agency, specifically what and how you can glean information even if you don't have access to a whisper network, bearing in mind, again, that it's never foolproof: Okay, so the basic research tools for looking up agents/agencies are:

QueryTracker, where you can see what they rep, who they rep (or *have* repped), and generally get an idea of their response times.

Publishers Marketplace, where you can see their specific sales*.

I know it's super raw and no one is expecting anyone to act immediately, but, for those who need it, a thread on mid-career querying you can bookmark and read when you're ready: First off, here's a post on it: dailydahlia.wordpress.com/2019/07/07/mid… This post is really more for if you're querying with a new manuscript, though, and I know that's not everyone's situation, but I think it's worth a read anyway.

Bookshop's got free shipping today (and 10% off most books always!), so here's a random thread of books I love and recommend, and also a link to mine: bookshop.org/lists/my-books… Looking for some creepy stuff this spooky season? Lamar Giles is alllways a good way to go, including his most recent chilling theme park dystopian, THE GETAWAY: bookshop.org/a/2943/9781338…

This is the thread I was talking about. I really like this thread, and also wish more people would learn what blood libel *is* so they’d stop conflating it with blood magic. In general the amount of “This is antisemitic!!” I’ve seen going around about stuff that patently is not is uhhh disconcerting? Because I know you mean well but all it tells me is you associate us with even more terrible stuff than the baseline.

I had the exact same thought yesterday, and in general this week as I had a couple of phone calls with pre-pub authors for various reasons. We truly horribly underprepare debut authors for so much. And debut groups are great but they're also groups of people who all don't know the same things, all don't know what they don't know, and all panic over the same things because how can they not?

As I sit here working my ass off on posts about queer books, I would just like to remind everyone that I also write queer books. And you can buy them! Seriously, it's A Lot and I am trying so hard not to be annoyed about how much work I do for books by authors who don't even say boo about my own work but I am losing that Rising Above battle and I really hate it. (Yes, I promise I know no one owes me anything, thanks.)

Today is such a good pub day I do not even know what to do with myself.

Oh, yes I do. LET'S TALK ABOUT BOOKS. I haven't gotten to read every book out today, but probably read more books releasing today than any other day of the year. It is a truly absurdly stacked day, but if you're feeling overwhelmed by what to read/buy/borrow, I can help with that.

Debut authors, if you’re gonna read your reviews, I can’t stop you; I know you’ve heard it all before. But I beg you: at least put it off until you’ve finished a draft of your next book. I cannot tell you how drastically everything changes with those added voices. There is no time like the window where you’re answering to no one, no deadline, nothing but your dreams that have no real concrete imagery to them yet. Hold tight to that time bc for all the great things that come with contracts, this is the biggest thing you give up.

What's your favorite cover song that is *not* Johnny Cash's "Hurt," Aretha Franklin's "Respect," Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower," Whitney Houston's "And I Will Always Love You," or Jeff Buckley *or* Rufus Wainwright's "Hallelujah"? Is it late enough at night for me to admit I do not think Me First and the Gimme Gimmes got the respect they deserved or are we still canceling people over pop culture takes this week

My closest friend at work is Ukrainian, and I asked her if she had anything she wanted me to share. She did; this thread on #StandWithUkraine is from her: For those who don't know Ukrainian but would like to follow the news I'd suggest following these resources in English:

The Kyiv Independent: kyivindependent.com
Their telegram: t.me/kyivindependent
#StandWithUkraine #RussiaUkraineWar

Really random tips for new authors that don't come up that often:

1) You *must* store metallic Sharpies upside-down or they'll dry out even faster
2) Get both Book Brush and Canva. They have slightly different uses and using them together makes stuff a snap even w/no skills 3) One of the million times you're going through your manuscript, copy and paste your favorite lines into a doc as you get to them, so when you wanna share them or make a graphic with them, they're easily accessible without hunting

This is your friendly reminder that a *ton* of books come out today and many of them are infreakingcredible and none of these authors get in-person launches or events or to see their books on shelves today so please promote and buy and support and make this day special! If you're a rom-com fan, today is an *excellent* day for you, since it brings both WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU by Marisa Kanter: bookshop.org/a/2943/9781534… and THE BEST LAID PLANS by Cameron Lund! bookshop.org/a/2943/9780593… Both are delightful and rom-coms in the truest sense.

Gonna make a new, clean website thread so I can outline it as clearly as possible.

If you’re an author, published or not, you should have a website, ideally attached to a domain with your name on it.

I recommend it have: *Your bio, photo, social media links

Your bio should be 3rd person, and yes, it’s okay to have one that is and one that isn’t, but publications need 3rd person.

*Contact info

A form is good; an email address makes you the most accessible, if that’s something you want.
