In the temple at #thirumazhappadi there is an inscription dating to the 15th regnal year of #rajendra I. His father #Rajaraja I had wanted to renovate the mazhappadi temple. In 1013 he issued a proclamation directing that the srivimanam be removed and replaced with a stone

based one (katraLi). Further he had directed that all the inscriptions in the temple we logged and reinscribed upon consecration. Rajaraja died the following year. Rajendra I undertook the renovation and it was completed it in 1026. Once this was done Rajendra I sent a

direction under the supervision of dandanayaka Raman arumozhiyaana uttama chozha brahmaraayan and with a committee of elders of the village of kandaraditha chaturvedi mangalam and perumpuliyur and officials of the temple including kuLavan chozhan arangalamudaiyan

pattaalagan and tirumazhapaadi pichan to verify the old inscriptions and reinscribe them without errors. This inscription is in the garbagruha wall of thirumazhappadi mulavar. Of the 83 lines of inscriptions 73 describe Rajendra's order. The 74th to the 83rd line is a

reproduction of the content of the original palm leaf directive of Rajaraja I

This is the cholas for you. Meticulous had a system of checks and balances - the right person was assigned to do the right job.. local self govt was involved and there were multiple channels of

feedback. They were learned well versed knew war statecraft and governance - and no it wasn't easy to fool them.. and from what they have left behind if we only learnt to follow their model of governance we would still be the dominant force in the surrounding 4 seas #cholas
