This provides a good opportunity to dispel some myths about the Nakba that are all too common, particularly among western audiences. Let’s take a brief stroll through history, shall we?
The state of Israel was declared in Palestine on May 14th, 1948. On May 15th, 1948, Arab armies from neighboring states to Palestine entered the battlefield. Here you can see one of the most common myths repeated in a NYT narrative around the Nakba. #Nakba75 Image
Note the sequence of events. The refugees are a result of the war. The war is the result of the Arab army invasion which followed the innocent act of declaring a state. How barbaric of those Arabs to do such a thing?
This all too common narrative presents Palestinian refugees as the result of Arab actions and as something that only began happening after May 15th, 1948. Nothing could be further from the truth.
In fact, of the 750-800,000 Palestinian refugees created during the Nakba and of the nearly 500 Palestinian Arab localities that were expelled and depopulated, some 400,000 refugees were created and some 212 localities were depopulated BEFORE May 15th, 1948.
Most took place in a period of 7 weeks from late March 1948 to mid May 1948 with the greatest intensity being in April & early May through the enactment of Plan Dalet, the conquest plan of Zionist Militias which aimed to conquer/destroy countless Palestinian towns and villages.
Most of the major Palestinian towns and cities were attacked and largely depopulated of their Palestinian Arab residents during this time.
Deir Yassin’s gruesome massacre, Tabariah, Haifa, Safad, Akka, Yaffa. All of these were brutally attacked and the vast majority of their Arab populations driven out.
All of this took place BEFORE the declaration of the state and the entrance of Arab armies into Palestine. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinian Arab refugees were forced from their homes and streamed into neighboring countries.
Quite contrary to the narrative presented by the NYT and many others, if there is a relationship between the entrance of the Arab armies in May 15 and the Palestinian refugees...
it is not that the invasion created the refugees but rather that Zionist attacks on Palestinian towns and villages that created the refugees helped prompt the invasion.
By this time, much of Palestine had already fallen to Zionist militias which would become the Israeli military.
What would follow is the further cleansing and depopulation of Palestinian towns and villages into the summer. Hundreds more Palestinian towns and villages would be attacked and cleansed.

There are a few common Zionist responses anytime a Palestinian mentions the Nakba, the ethnic cleansing of Palestine.

One lie is: It never happened!

But then there is this, not uncommon response: The problem with the ethnic cleansing is we should've done it more!!! Image
And don't just think this is some kook with a twitter account, it isn't just that. This view was shared by Benny Morris, one of the Israeli historians that uncovered much of how the Israeli military forced Palestinians from their homes. Image
"A Jewish state would not have come into being without the uprooting of 700,000 Palestinians. Therefore it was necessary to uproot them. There was no choice but to expel that population."

Netanyahu has managed to do something no one else has been able to do when it comes to US-Israelrelations; wake Joe Biden up.
Despite a very significant shift in opinion among Democrats in favor of Palestinians since 2016, Biden has done everything and more to hug Israel tighter than the Obama admin ever did and be even more muted in criticism of Israeli policy.
As far Israel/Palestine policy is concerned, the Biden admin policy has been to not have a policy and basically be more hands off than ever even as Democrats in polls increasingly call for a tougher US response.

A journalist asked me a little while ago if I think Netanyahu and co will continue to press the legislative agenda after a months pause or drop it....
A lot can happen over a few weeks time so it is impossible to tell what else might change between now and then but given everything we have seen thus far it is hard to imagine them giving up the effort in a month.....
This is part of a long standing effort by religious nationalists to reorder Israeli society, it didn't start with this government, many others contributed to it including in previous governments, liked Bennett and Shaked and others.

This may very well result in the targeting of Palestinians in Jerusalem, in the West Bank and in other cities.
Ben Gvirs brute squad and Netanyahu's henchmen are going to try to drag Palestinians into this. It is useful for them in several ways....

What is happening in Israel is anything but a fight to "save democracy", it is a fight to save a a particular system of privilege which is under direct threat.
This government and their legislative agenda envisioned a major opportunity to reshape Israeli politics and society, entrenching their control and thus reordering society in ways they see fit.
There has always been a modus vivendi between the religious and secular Jewish communities in Israel while there has undoubtedly been moments of tension as well. This is a major break point.

Two recent polls, one by Gallup and the other by Pew, taken together suggest some interesting trends about what is, and what isn’t happening. I'll explain in this thread.
In this poll released last week by Gallup, they show that for the first time, a majority of Democrats sympathize with Palestinians more than Israelis. news.gallup.com/poll/472070/de…
Also last week, this poll by Pew looked at attitudes of Americans toward different religious groups in the United States pewresearch.org/religion/2023/…
