Did you know that Brighton also have an out-of-possession phase beside the build-up phase? Jokes aside, quick thread to analyze the quite interesting De Zerbi's OOP strategy against Arsenal.

@11OnceSport Image
It was a very interesting match-up between two teams that master both build-up and pressing. Basically a chess match between De Zerbi and Arteta.
Arsenal (4-3-3): 4+1 build-up with wide FB, Jorginho as the DM. Odegaard and Xhaka would drop deep on the ball side to offer a pass line (sometimes side by side with Jorginho and forming a 4+2). ImageImage
Brighton's approach was very aggressive and brave with man-to-man marking leaving only 3 players back.

Ferguson (ST) on Gabriel (LCB)
McAllister (AM) on Kiwior (RCB)
Gilmour (LDM) on Jorginho (DM)
Wingers on FBs
Gross (RDM) on Xhaka (LCM)
Colwill (LCB) on Odegaard (RCM) Image
What catches the eye the most is certainly what De Zerbi asked to Colwill, the LCB, who had to follow Odegaard man-to-man everywhere, even when the Norwegian was replacing Jorginho in the DM position or even as as the CB in a temporary back three. Image
It's a very risky choice because it effectively leaves a constant 3vs3 at the back, but De Zerbi's idea is to press high and contain Arsenal's build-up to the point where it is extremely difficult to find Saka, Jesus or Trossard.
One thing I found interesting was the narrowness of the pressure. A possible drawback to this is the freedom the FBs enjoyed, but Mitoma and Enciso were very able in running wide straight away to press them by exploiting the touchline as an extra man (also helped by the FBs). ImageImageImage
I wanna conclude with three videos that I find very illustrative.

The 1st concerns a standard Arsenal right-sided pressure situation that forces Arteta's team into a long ball.

The 2nd is an example of Brighton's pressing on the left-side, with Gross at first pressing Xhaka forcing him to play it back to Kiwior. He then runs at Kiriow overshadowing Xhaka, forcing Arsenal wide where they almost win the ball back.
The last one is my favourite because it perfectly illustrates the hunger with which the Brighton players want to recover the ball. The action starts as a free kick and turns into a ruthless hunt for the ball, everyone chasing their man everywhere.

Le chiavi della vittoria del Milan

- Aggressività uomo su uomo a centrocampo e vittoria duelli individuali

THIS IS BUILD UP FROM THE BACK

Mitoma's goal stems from building up from the back even if it doesn't seem so. The whole idea behind building up from the back consists in attracting opposition's pressure to then find space behind pressure lines to attack, as happened here.
Brighton better than many other teams exemplify this concept by bringing many players into their own half of the pitch (if not into their own area) to attract pressure, break it with their passing technique and patterns to then attack with space.
Brentford (5-3-2) defended like this:

STs on CBs
LWB on RB
LCM and CM on CMs
RCM on LB

Brighton moves Mac Allister deeper and Welbeck wide to take out Brentford's CCB and RCB, creating a HUGE space between LCB and RWB perfectly exploited by Steele's pass and Mitoma's movement.

[THREAD] Tactical Analysis of Barcelona - Manchester United

Frantic and chaotic match in which individual mistakes have been decisive. Let's delve into the tactical aspects of the game.

I'll mainly focus on Barcelona, but it'd be impossible to ignore the gameplan of Man United.
Both managers opted for rather surprising choices. Ten Hag proposed a sort of 4-3-3 with Fred and Weghorst as #8 and Rashford central. From that position the Dutch had a central role out of possession and helped with aerial duels and layoffs, Rashford was a threat in-behind.
Xavi biggest surprise was starting Marcos Alonso instead of Christensen (one of the best player of Barça in this season). In addition, Koundé and Araújo switched position (the former CB, the latter RB), and Alba plays at LB instead of Balde.

What I'd try OOP for Arsenal

Cautious approach:
- Narrow 4231
- Do not concede numerical superiority centrally
- Be ready to double up on wingers with Saka/Martinelli

Aggressive approach:
- Man-marking
- Zinchenko tucked in for 4vs4
- Martinelli/Saka covershadowing wingers
Partey and Jorginho in could severely undermine the effectiveness of the second approach though
I placed the ball centrally and in Dias's possession to give an overall idea of the movements on both flanks. Naturally, depending on the area of the pitch where the ball is, the movements and the markings should vary.

1. Modulo base
2. Modulo in possesso
