I'll say this for Sam Altman: He's definitely learned how to package "I'm deeply concerned about AI overlords and being hunted in a Terminator-esque wasteland of bombed out cites and mountains of human skulls" into a mainstream-appealed senate-hearing soundbyte. #SenateAIHearing
Thank you, Senator Welch, for helping "AI" and silicon valley sell their model and vision of regulatory capture.
You need to pay VERY CAREFUL ATTENTION to the fact that every plea for regulation is followed by a "…and we would love to partner with you on that." #SenateAIHearing
Marsha Blackburn coming at "AI" Art mainly from the side of copyright and only mentioning as an afterthought the idea of consent by human artists to have their works used as training data is one of the least surprising lines of questioning thus far today. #SenateAIHearing
Klobuchar and Hawley both really focusing in on misinformation and democracy; Hawley talking a lot about deepfake-type problems, Klobuchar on generating things like false polling place information, or quickly made rafts of social media posts with disinformation. #SenateAIHearing
Gary Marcus keeps hammering on transparency, but thus far there's only been a couple of brief mentions about meaningful accountability & oversight to change what's gone wrong. Even external boards & regs only get so much if the companies themselves shaped them. #SenateAIHearing
Graham pushing for a regulatory agency and licensure and while also not letting people actually speak and elaborate on points demonstrates how he continues to be the absolute worst. Like, he can very definitely think about complex things, but he is just an bully. #SenateAIHearing
Coons asking surprisingly trenchant questions about the values of the data on which "AI" is trained, and differences between fine-tuning and constitutional modeling. #SenateAIHearing
Lot's of AI policy movement in the U.S. this week, and you can have some say in a lot of it. Here's a thread:
The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology has a new Working Group on Generative AI, and they've opened their public comment period prior to their session this Friday, May 19.
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (@WHOSTP ) has also requested public comment on how automated tools are being used to surveil, monitor, and manage workers:
Read about it here: regulations.gov/document/OSTP_…;
Comment on it here: regulations.gov/commenton/OSTP…
If you're an "A.I" desinger or engineer who genuinely believes your woek will be or is already "conscious" in a "human-like" way, then the first thing imma need you to do tomorrow is teach it not to cross the picket line 🤷🏾♂️
Look, either you a) truly believe in the potential consciousness of "A.I.," in which case it's your duty to do everything you can to get it to be moral & just; b) believe "a.i." is merely a tool, in which case you must ensure the values Embedded in those tools are moral & just;…
…c) are deeply unsure about the conscious status of "A.I." tools & systems but recognise we are woven w/in an embedded, entangled world anyway, in which case you are obligated to seek to do everything you can to ensure that WHATEVER we create, conscious or no, is moral & just;…
So one of the main problems with this country is that Property is placed on the same valuative level as people's literal Lives. In fact, if you look at the structure of the declaration of independence, you'll see John Locke's formula, but w/ "property" euphemism'd as "happiness".
Think about that: We built a whole society around the notion "Life"="Liberty"="Happiness(==Property)." So if those things have equal value & it's not just fine but Good to use violence to protect your life & your liberty, then violence must ALSO be good to protect your PROPERTY…
…because, again, in that formulation, property matters (should matter) as much as someone's liberty & their literal life. And not just "as much as," but in many cases MORE THAN.
This is the kind of shit that leads not only to people beating shoplifters, or shooting "looters"…
I really feel like not enough people really understand and appreciate that almost all of the late 90's and early 200's had their humour shaped by a very specific three mile radius of downtown Atlanta.

Like, I could write an entire history paper (or atleast wikipedia entry) about this scene:
"That's gonna travel all the way to the village XD "
"…The village!
"…This is all that was left. Their 6-ft party sub. Their king— Randy— made if for me while I waited."
