Ridley Scott’s swords-and-sandals classic GLADIATOR was released 23 years ago today. An enormous production full of star names, the making of story is as epic as the film itself.

A THREAD

Dreamworks always wanted Ridley Scott as director, but he wasn’t certain. To convince him, they showed him an 1872 painting by Jean Leon Gerome - Pollice Verso – as what they wanted to recreate. Scott said the painting played a part in him signing on.

2/35 ImageImage
Scott’s vision was a huge production:
- Over 10,000 costumes and 30,000 pieces of armour were created.
- They built a 52-ft tall Colosseum. It took 7 months to build and cost $1m.
- Ground-breaking digital effects created the city, pushing effects boundaries of the time.

George Lucas' first film was THX-1138 in 1971. It was a box office bomb but did pique studios' interests. UA offered Lucas a two-film deal. The first was American Graffiti. The second was what Lucas called “a space opera that’s a bit like a western, a bit like James Bond.”

2/37 ImageImageImage
Lucas’ first idea was to make an adaptation of the Flash Gordon TV series he loved as a kid. He couldn’t get the rights but still took from Flash Gordon in the Star Wars prologues…

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY was released 55 years ago today. Acclaimed as one of the greatest and most influential films to come out of Hollywood, the making of story behind Stanley Kubrick’s classic is as epic as the film itself.

A THREAD

1/29
After Dr Strangelove, Kubrick knew he wanted to direct a groundbreaking science fiction film, and work with a co-writer. He got in touch with acclaimed sci fi author and futurist Arthur C. Clarke by letter telling him his plans.

2/29
Kubrick’s first idea was for it to be short stories set in space. Clarke had the idea of basing it on his own story The Sentinel, written for a BBC competition and published in 10 Story Fantasy. It told the story of an artifact found on the moon, left there by aliens.

THE MATRIX was released 24 years ago today. One of the most iconic and groundbreaking movies of its generation, the making of story is a fascinating one.

A THREAD

In 1995, Lana and Lily Wachowski had written Assassins. The producer of that film was Joel Silver, and the Wachowskis showed him their new screenplay – called The Matrix.

Silver loved the screenplay, but not the Wachowskis’ insistence that they direct it themselves.

2/25
Instead, the young filmmakers directed a crime thriller called Bound. It was a commercial flop but Warner Bros were impressed and offered to fund The Matrix, with the Wachowskis directing.
