Memorizing openings from a ready-made pgn is often ineffective.

You might remember the lines for a few days, but in the long term, you’ll forget what you learned.

Instead, here’s a 4-step process to MEMORIZE OPENINGS and NOT forget the lines for a long time:

🧵

Step 1 – STUDY WITH 107% ATTENTION!🎯

Be fully focused when studying!

Whether you’re watching videos, reading a book, or working with someone, pay 107% attention to the source you’re learning from.

Make opening files later.

As GM Vladimir Akopian shares his philosophy: Image
Step 2 – CREATE YOUR FILES 📁

- If your memory is great, watch the entire course, then create your pgn files.

- If your memory is weak, add the opening variations one video at a time.

But always pay attention to what you’re learning, and only then create the opening file.
‘First learn and then create files’ is more time-consuming than opening 2 tabs simultaneously; watching a course in one and creating a pgn in the other.

But it’s far more effective because:

(a) You’re paying attention.
(b) You’re actively learning by creating the file.
Step 3 – PRACTICE ⚔️

After you’ve watched a course or finished reading a chapter, it’s time to practice.

How?

Play with a training partner.

Eg: You & a friend watched the Scotch course. Afterward, you can play a few friendly games where you only play the Scotch. Image
Step 4 – FIX MISTAKES 🔨

When you start practicing new openings, there’s no way you’ll remember everything and play it correctly.

That’s why you must check your games and fix mistakes. Else, you’ll just repeat the same mistakes.
How to fix?

Let’s say you played some online games.

Download them and compare them with your files, which you created in step 2.

- Did you follow the principles?
- Did you play everything as it was in your opening file correctly?

If not, make a note and move forward.
Summarizing everything:

How to Memorize Chess Openings without Forgetting Them a Few Days Later?

Step 1 – Study with 107% attention!🎯
Step 2 – Create your files📁
Step 3 – Practice⚔️
Step 4 – Fix mistakes🔨

And that’s also how you apply the SPF (Study-Practice-Fix) formula for improving your chess openings.
