It is a well known fact that timelines slip and ambitions sometimes are not realized, but fact is: Royal Navy is working on its Future Maritime Aviation Force vision of a variety of drones integrating helicopters and a "standard" carrier wing of 2x F-35B Sqns (24 embarked jets) ImageImage
The road to FMAF is undoubtedly long and complex. Much of what is being pursued was, quite simply, never done before. There is no ready manual, much of it has yet to be written and progress will come in stages, both for technical and budgetary reasons. Image
1) carriers: Royal Navy has already demonstrated it can operate both to sea at same time if needed, and might do so again this autumn, considering Prince of Wales is scheduled to return and work up ahead of high readiness next year, and QE will be deploying. Image
2) F-35B: 1st tranche of 48 is now either delivered (30) or in production and deliveries will conclude in 2025/Lot 17. Work now is on for procurement of 2nd tranche (Lot 18 onwards) to get to 74 by "early 2030s" including replacement for lost ZM152, according to CAS the other day Image
3) Possible ship modifications: the Royal Navy is aware that integrating drones capable of ISR (including AEW), Strike and ideally Air to Air refuelling might require, at a minimum, barriers/arresting gear if not some form of catapult. Project ARK ROYAL is looking at both. Image
4) VAMPIRE. The Qinetiq BANSHEE 80+ has been procured as a threat simulation drone and replacement for the HAWK T1s of disbanded 736 NAS, but this is intended to be the first role only. VAMPIRE is looking at fitting ISR (EO/IR and a small conformal AESA radar) equipment onto them Image
5) VIXEN. Longer term, a fixed-wing, multirole drone with a large payload is the aim, to contribute to Strike and to hopefully succeed to CROWSNEST in delivering Airborne Early Warning so the overworked MERLINs can go back to doing ASW "only". ImageImageImageImage
6) MOJAVE: the latest announcement for 7 months of evaluations with General Atomics' Short Take Off and Landing solutions for large (MQ-9B PROTECTOR class drones) will be exploring just how far you can go in terms of drone sizes and weights WITHOUT needing to modify the ship. ImageImageImageImage
7) PROTEUS: due to fly in 2025, this uncrewed helicopter being developed by Leonardo at Yeovil will have MTOW of 7000 lbs/3000+ kg with large payload. Again, aim is to contribute to AEW and ASW, supporting manned MERLIN. MCM mission is also looking at using air drones in support. ImageImageImageImage
8) PRIMUS: Heavy Lift drone(s), supported by a dedicate NAVYPODS container, with the ability to move loads between ships and ship to shore, to ensure VERTREP tasks / carrier on board delivery and many others that do not quite require a manned helicopter are covered more cheaply. ImageImageImage
9) MINERVA: automated Search and Rescue able to locate a man in water, drop SAR kit and mark position, cutting down requirement for plane guard helicopter etc. Like Heavy Lift, this is now finding purchase abroad and in the Army (see CASEVAC simulation at Wessex Storm this month) ImageImageImage
10) PEREGRINE / Flexible Tactical UAS: urgent operational requirement for deployed warships, primarily in the Gulf. Shiebel S100 helicopter with EO/IR and Thales I-Master search radar. Image
11) At lower levels there are small drones like PUMA All Environment, PRIMIS and SECONDIS being purchased for Royal Marines use, the latter with the ability to be tethered to serve as a virtual high observation mast; the Anduril GHOST S4 helicopter also used by RAF Regiment etc.

Looks like we are finally close to contract award for Project TYRO. WFEL's Dry Support Bridge to replace ABLE and LEGUAN sets for TITAN... and BOXER, maybe. A wheeled close support bridgelayer requirement had been added in. shephardmedia.com/news/landwarfa…
The Close Support Bridge requirement, last time the tender was publicly issued, included bridge sets for fitting upon the existing 33 TITAN but also a requirement for "14-36 Wheeled Close Support Launch Vehicles". ImageImageImageImage
Unsurprisingly, ever since TYRO sprung a requirement for a wheeled close support bridgelayer, BOXER option has been showing up everywhere. WFEL owns one of the 2 BOXER assembly lines in the UK, as well as the bridging stuff it is most renowned for, so they have been all over this ImageImageImageImage

L115A4 and new sights/ballistic calculator at WESSEX STORM 2023. I can't tell from photos if the new Day scope is on or if it is still the L24A1 Schmidt and Bender, but the In-Line should be the PHOENIX-S medium wave infra-red, and thus the new Sniper In-line Low Sight System 1. The L115A4 is a reconstruction of the existing L115A3 which changes the chassis with a modern one offering the panoply of rails needed to take full advantage of the new sights and accessories. The range of sighs is being entirely renewed with contracts placed last year. ImageImageImageImage

While there is much in french military procurement that can be admired, and i think the transparency of Military Planning Law mechanism is something UK needs, beware of celebrating it as perfect and always make sure to distinguish between long term goals and real numbers.
For example, people reads that France plans to procure 50 A400M and thinks they really have them. Reality is, they actually have less than the RAF due to slower acquisition. Rafale: 225 has been the goal for so many years that some people think they have that many. Not even close
What France undoubtedly tends to have is a more prudent approach to transitions between old and new. Unlike the UK they don't entirely remove old fleet early. Number of Rafale is still below the number of Typhoon RAF received, for example, but they hang on to Mirages.

This was already done earlier with the UK taking 3 old norwegian M270, that will be upgraded and rebuilt to the new and latest standard within the British Army's ongoing project. Existing, GMLRS-ready British M270s in the meanwhile go to Ukraine to kick asses.
Note: transfer of 8 M270s from Norway to UK might actually translate in a NEW transfer of "just" 5 to Ukraine. This is because UK already sent 6 modernized M270s to Ukraine but only received 3 from Norway. UK planning to increase, not reduce M270s in service, so deficit needs fix

British Army is to replace, by circa 2026, STORMER vehicles used for SHORAD. BOXER is an option. As for missiles we can expect to see, at least initially, the same LMM/STARSTREAK now in use. A new STARSTREAK variant is in development with a contract signed last December. ImageImageImageImage
We have been given indirect clue of the fact that the Army wants the new vehicle to be as dual role as possible. STORMER technically already is, although so far operational use against surface targets is more or less unheard of. DSTL working on "Advanced Modular Missile Station"
The official description for the Advanced Modular Missile Station" says "Dstl is working with Army HQ and DE&S to develop a technology demonstrator to detect and destroy multiple armoured and air threats at ranges in excess of 8km." Pretty unambiguous!

"Nordic Air Force" is RAF's natural partner. Geographically, the most important as it sits directly in the way of any direct russian threat towards the UK. The Nordic Air Force will have around 140 F-35s and thus a great striking power but 1 main weakness: air to air refueling.
The RAF as it stands is unfortunately next to useless for them as F-35A requires boom, so Voyager only good for Sweden's Gripens. But the "surge" Voyagers, refitted with booms and assigned to a joint squadron, would be one of the best investments either party could make.
Voyagers finally fitted with Booms would also become able to support E-7 Wedgetail, P-8 Poseidon, C-17 and Rivet Joint. And that would be a really good thing. Would reduce the current complete dependence on the US 100 Air Refueling Wing, in particular for Rivet Joint.
