AI & WRITERS OF COLOR [THREAD] - The #WGAstrong strike has me reflecting how whether AI may someday replace writers, it can never replace writers of color. Algorithmic bias, facial recognition tech, etc. prove AI isn't post-race & studies show AI reinforces racial inequality. 1/6
AI is not an objective thinking machine. It is a structure developed in a white supremacist society. Descartes said, “I think therefore I am.” But, he said it when indigenous peoples of Africa, the Americas & Asia were considered barbarians incapable of thinking. 2/6
Today's AI is the patrimony of a white-dominated tech industry & white-centered knowledge production. It’s programming, references, etc. is sourced from white supremacist society. 3/6
Scripts an AI may draw from to composite a new one come from a canon/catalogue a white-dominated culture industry that's always marginalized writers of color. AI can't capture our experience or voice much less the nuance or critiques that've often been in our work. 4/6
To me, it’s more than coincidence that precisely when writers of color have filtered into mainstream culture industry in wake of protest of mvmnts that white studio execs want AI to script entertainment that'll never be able to capture our voice & stories we've yet to tell. 5/6
AI will draw from Hollywood movies that've been propaganda for U.S. capitalism, imperialism, militarism & dominant forces like whiteness or heteropatriarchy. Writers of color have always contested this dominance & we'll need to when AI authors it. We'll always be necessary. 6/6

I WENT TO A MIGRANT SHELTER [THREAD] || Friday, I went to the shelter @ByronSigcho established for asylum-seekers dominating local headlines. It was impressive & moving. 1/9
Lightfoot virtue-signal-invited refugees to Chicago w/ no plan or resources to welcome them. (They’re not cops or a corp. after all.) Across the city, asylum-seekers have been sleeping on the floors of police & park district buildings but not in the @25thWardChicago. 2/9
While the city fails the migrants, @ByronSigcho & his Ward office have created a safe safe for these migrants and forged a mighty network of volunteers, local businesses and community organizations to service the asylum-seekers. 3/9
“DEFUND,” VALLAS & RACISM - Repeatedly, Vallas's (white) supporters call Johnson the "defund candidate." But, Johnson never said he'd defund CPD. Johnson said he'd maintain the CPD budget. So why keep saying it? I’d argue calling him the “defund” candidate is rooted in racism.
Crime's an issue in Chicago like any U.S. city. Headlines frame it as a war zone, but murder rate overall has steadily decline since the 90s until COVID-19. But crime in Chicago isn't distributed evenly. It occurs mostly in Black & Brown communities deprived of resources.
The murder rate in somewhere like Garfield Park (146 per 100k residents) is comparable to the most violent city in the world, Tijuana, Mexico (138 per 100k), while parts of the wealthier and whiter North Side are safer than they've been in a generation (3.2 per 100k).
