The demolished neighborhood of the leather makers along the historical aqueduct in old #Cairo, with the new ‘development’ in the background #Egypt
Walking through the still standing part of the old neighbourhood was surreal: A wall cuts right through it, behind which the new luxury apartments have been built or are under construction. Old & new, poor & rich, right next to each other but separated by a wall
Residents of the old part were vocal about their anger about the project and the gov. They couldn't comprehend how these kinds of luxury projects are being executed amid soaring inflation and them struggling to make ends meet #Egypt
People from the demolished parts have been relocated to the new gov-built Asmarat neighborhood, where there are no jobs, they said. The new leather maker workshops are even further away, 50 km from the city centre in the Robeiky industrial area #Egypt
One resident asked if the Netherlands was a kingdom. Yes I said, showing some reservations about it. "Well, better a kingdom than the army!" he said.
Residents made dark, ironic jokes when asked about the demolitions and the new development. Why this wall: "Because we are thieves"
What happened to the people: "The people died" #Egypt

Went to visit the renovated synagogue in #Alexandria last week, with three other Europeans and one Egyptian. However, they did not let the Egyptian in. "Egyptians are not allowed," they said at the gate #Egypt
One added, 'because of the religion', but it's not clear to me whether Christian Egyptians could enter or not. The police guards were quite friendly and apologetic about it. "Orders from high up," they excused themselves #Egypt#Alexandria
I remember attending the reopening of the synagogue at a big press event in 2020. The synagogue was a symbol of #Egypt's diversity and tolerance between world religions, the minister said in his speech, celebrating Judaism as part of Egyptian history and civilisation #Alexandria
