1/ An analysis of social media messages by relatives of Wagner Group members fighting in Bakhmut shows that January 2023 was likely the deadliest month for the mercenary organisation. At least 502 are confirmed to have died, though the real figure is likely many times more. ⬇️
2/ The independent Russian media outlet Verstka has analysed tens of thousands of social media posts by relatives of Wagner members with the daily reports published by the Institute for the Study of War (@TheStudyofWar), and has found clear correlations with specific operations.
3/ They include "messages in which the authors indicated the date of death, or provided supporting documents – a death certificate, an extract from the registry office, copies of posthumous award letters and letters of thanks indicating the place of death of their loved one."
4/ From this data, Verstka judges that Wagner began sustaining heavy casualties in and around Bakhmut from October 2022. Messages reporting the deaths of loved ones were infrequent in August and September, when the front line had not yet reached Bakhmut.
5/ Verstka says that 55% of the total reported Wagner fatalities in October occurred on just two dates – 24 and 27 October. This correlates with Ukrainian forces repelling attacks on a concrete plant and areas around Bakhmut.
6/ In November 2022, the number of reports of dead Wagner members increased by more than 250% as they were sent on suicidal assaults against Ukrainian positions. Verstka says that reported "deaths in the first two weeks of the month are evenly distributed on almost every day".
7/ 12.5% of reported Wagner deaths in November occurred on 19 November, with another spike on 21 November, when its members sought to capture Klischiivka and Ivanhrad south of Bakhmut.
8/ Reported Wagner fatalities increased by another 250% in December, 13.1% of them happening on 8 December as Wagner was seeking to take the village of Yakovlivka. An assault on eastern Bakhmut between 13-18 December caused another spike in casualties.
9/ At least 1,000 Wagner members are said by the US to have died in December alone. In January 2023, fatalities jumped by another 300%. The second and third weeks accounted for 54% of all reported Wagner fatalities in the entire battle, correlating with the capture of Soledar.
10/ By this point, Wagner had sustained so many fatalities that it was reported to be having problems in removing all the bodies. It was said to be having to "run around the market with the corpses" to find drivers and trucks so they could be repatriated.
11/ During February 2023, the number of reported fatalities dropped by almost 35%. More than 18% of fatalities during the month occurred on 4 and 24 February, correlating with attempts to encircle Bahkmut from the north, east and south.
12/ Another drop occurred in March 2023. The reported death toll was about 35% below the February level and 58% below the January figures. About 73% of all reports of the death of Wagner members occurred in the first half of March, by when about 50% of the city had been captured.
13/ A further fall in reported fatalities occurred in April 2023, but Verstka notes that this may be distorted by Wagner being slow to inform relatives of the deaths of their loved ones. By this point, Wagner was fighting towards the city centre.
14/ It hasn't yet been possible for Verstka to do an analysis of May's reported fatalities, but frontline reports suggest the month has been "extremely tense and bloody." Wagner head Yevgeny Prigozhin posted a video showing the bodies of dead fighters.
15/ By now, as Verstka notes, it's likely that Russia has sustained tens of thousands of fatalities in and near Bakhmut. A disproportionate number are likely to have been poorly trained 'disposable troops' recruited from prisons. /end
1/ Anti-Ukrainian paranoia has effectively resulted in the colours yellow and blue being banned in Russia, with objects – and even people – wearing those colours being removed or covered up. Items affected have included hair, clothes, crests, buildings, and artworks. ⬇️
2/ The anti-yellow and blue hysteria isn't officially sanctioned. The State Duma's Deputy Speaker, Vladislav Davankov, has asked the Interior Ministry "to bring clarity and publish a clarification that the combination of yellow and blue is not grounds for cases and detentions".
3/ Devankov commented: "Patriotic vigilantism reaches the point of absurdity ... If it continues in this vein, soon we'll start shooting blue tits in Russia, hundreds of brands will have to be shut down for their yellow and blue logos, ...
1/ Another account has emerged of the fate of the Russian 1439th Regiment, which was reported to have been virtually wiped out in March 2023 during disastrous attacks on Ukrainian positions near Avdiivka. The mother of one of the casualties has spoken of what happened. ⬇️
2/ Baikal Journal reports on the story of 24-year-old Pavel Iratov (a pseudonym) from Ust-Kut, Irkutsk region, who was mobilised in October 2022. Despite having deficient vision he went willingly, as he considered it his duty and his great-grandfather was a WW2 veteran.
3/ He was sent to the 'Donetsk People's Republic' (DNR) in December and assigned to the 1439th Regiment, under the DNR's 1st Slavyansk Brigade. The mobilised men from the brigade found themselves being "considered meat and led to slaughter", in their own words.
1/ Corrupt officials selling information from police databases may have inadvertently contributed to recent assassinations in Russia. The Russian government is now reportedly cracking down on the theft of data from state databases.
2/ Russia has for years had a huge black market in all kinds of personal data, including from state organisations. Scammers and private detectives frequently use it to target individuals and steal from bank accounts. bbc.co.uk/news/world-eur…
3/ A recent scandal and investigation reported by the VChK-OGPU Telegram channel provides some interesting detail on how data from the Russian police has ended up on the black market. Such data is suspected of having been used to target recent assassination victims.
1/ Donbas separatist Pavel Gubarev has complained that too few Russians see occupied parts of Ukraine as Russian, and warns that if the war is lost, "You will not be able to earn money, women will stop giving you money, you will not have children, you will all be fucking drunk."
2/ In a video posted by Gubarev, he says that the occupation authorities in the Kherson region conducted a survey on the inhabitants' attitudes towards Russia. It found "very different" results from those living in the Luhansk and Donetsk 'People's Republics'.
3/ Gubarev argues that the inhabitants of the "new territories" have lost their "identity" as Russians because of "Ukrainian propaganda". He also complains that Russian society does not perceive the "new territories" as part of the Russian Federation.
1/ In an apparent endorsement of vigilante violence, a Russian court has given a lenient sentence to a man who stabbed two other men nine times for criticising the war in Ukraine, on the grounds that the victims had "discredited the Russian army in front of witnesses". ⬇️
2/ The case was heard in the Raduzhny City Court of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, a region in western Siberia. According to the verdict, the men "drank alcohol while in the kitchen-living room of the apartment."
3/ "At some point, the conversation turned to the conduct of a special military operation on the territory of the Republic of Ukraine, during which some men began to speak rudely at the expense of the Russian-speaking population and the conduct of a special military operation."
1/ The Wagner mercenary group is reported to be pulling its most experienced members out of Ukraine and sending them to Sudan, with remaining "unnecessary fighters" being left to die in Bakhmut. It may rebrand itself as the "Musicians" or "Orchestra" private military company. ⬇️
2/ The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel reports that according to a source (presumably within Wagner), Wagner's boss Yevgeny Prigozhin has begun "to withdraw the most proven and experienced cadres of the Wagner PMC to Sudan", which may become a future base for Wagner in Africa.
3/ "In Sudan, the PMC has a big new contract with the Rapid Support Force [which has been fighting Sudanese government forces], and redeployment of mercenaries to that country has begun. Including those who took part in the fighting in Bakhmut."
