A solemn and sacred ceremony of vesting of Sengol — dharma dada —- in the hands of Pandit Nehru by a Saint from Tamil Nadu took place at the midnight of August 14-15 of 1947 to symbolise the transfer of power from the British to Bharat
Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, who was tasked with the responsibility of transfer of power, enquired from Pandit Nehru about a powerful symbol, that can represent the transfer of power from the British to India.
Pandit Nehru trusted the erudite scholar & freedom fighter C. Raja Gopalachari’s knowledge of Indian customs & civilization to find a perfect symbol for the transfer of power. C. Raja Gopalachari found the answer in the ancient Chola kingdom of Tamil Nadu. #SengolAtNewParliament
After studying the issue in depth, Rajaji found that the Tamil tradition of vesting Sengol, accompanied by a recital of 11 verses from the sacred Tamil Thevaram text invoking Shiva’s blessings, to bless the new ruler would be the most appropriate ceremony #SengolAtNewParliament
The ceremony symbolising the transfer of power from the Viceroy representing the British to the PM representing Bharat took place before when Pt. Nehru hoisted the national flag & addressed the nation with his famous phrase tryst with destiny at midnight #SengolAtNewParliament
On the night of August 14, 1947, Sri La Sri Kumarswamy Thambiran, was specially flown in for the occasion from Tamil Nadu and was tasked with the important responsibility of handing over the sacred sengol to symbolize the transfer of power.
India received her freedom when #Sengol - the symbol of transfer of power in the ancient Chola kingdom, was placed in Pandit Nehru’s hand on Aug 14, 10:45 PM in the presence of Rajendra Prasad who eventually became the 1st President of Independent India.
The 'Sengol,' derived from the Tamil word 'Semmai' meaning 'Righteousness,' holds deep significance. Blessed by the Saivite Mutt priests, it embodies the unwavering gaze of the sacred Nandi. It grants rulers the noble order to govern justly & fairly.
The #Sengol is made of silver & gold and is a masterpiece of Indian art. The Nandi which majestically sits at the top of Sengol is the protector & symbol of justice.
