1/ The extraordinary success of the Russian Volunteer Corps in taking over a chunk of the Russian border for a day and a half was reportedly due to it being virtually undefended. It was guarded by only 25 men, 23 of whom were barely-trained conscripts. ⬇️
2/ The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel has posted a conversation with the mother of an 18-year-old Karelian conscript, Ivan F., who was wounded in the clashes. It reports that he was conscripted in November 2022 and was assigned to unit 91711 (the 272nd Motorised Rifle Regiment).
3/ According to VChK-OGPU, "The conscripts were "in the fields" [likely meaning sitting in tents] until [17th] February 2023. After that, in complete secrecy, recruits from the military unit were "scattered" to different points to guard the border."
4/ "Thus, 25 men, including only one lieutenant [and] one mobilised man, were guarding the Graivoron district, while the rest (including Ivan) were conscript soldiers."
5/ When Ivan was wounded by shelling, his mother says, "his lieutenant shoved him in a car and drove him to the hospital with some guy. Then the lieutenant kind of went back there to the other guys." /end

1/ Yevgeny Prigozhin's most recent video interview (see below) may have inadvertently given away more information than he intended: the map behind him appears to indicate Wagner's worldwide interests, including some not previously publicly known. ⬇️
2/ The indepedent Russian media outlet Verstka has noticed that the map appears to indicate Wagner's worldwide business interests in 32 countries around the world, including in Latin America, Asia and Oceania. It comments: Image
3/ "Attached to the map are 32 markers in three colours – red, white and green. Red marks are on seven African countries: Mozambique, Central African Republic, Sudan, Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin and Eritrea.

1/ Anti-Ukrainian paranoia has effectively resulted in the colours yellow and blue being banned in Russia, with objects – and even people – wearing those colours being removed or covered up. Items affected have included hair, clothes, crests, buildings, and artworks. ⬇️ Image
2/ The anti-yellow and blue hysteria isn't officially sanctioned. The State Duma's Deputy Speaker, Vladislav Davankov, has asked the Interior Ministry "to bring clarity and publish a clarification that the combination of yellow and blue is not grounds for cases and detentions".
3/ Devankov commented: "Patriotic vigilantism reaches the point of absurdity ... If it continues in this vein, soon we'll start shooting blue tits in Russia, hundreds of brands will have to be shut down for their yellow and blue logos, ... Image

1/ Another account has emerged of the fate of the Russian 1439th Regiment, which was reported to have been virtually wiped out in March 2023 during disastrous attacks on Ukrainian positions near Avdiivka. The mother of one of the casualties has spoken of what happened. ⬇️ Image
2/ Baikal Journal reports on the story of 24-year-old Pavel Iratov (a pseudonym) from Ust-Kut, Irkutsk region, who was mobilised in October 2022. Despite having deficient vision he went willingly, as he considered it his duty and his great-grandfather was a WW2 veteran.
3/ He was sent to the 'Donetsk People's Republic' (DNR) in December and assigned to the 1439th Regiment, under the DNR's 1st Slavyansk Brigade. The mobilised men from the brigade found themselves being "considered meat and led to slaughter", in their own words.

1/ An analysis of social media messages by relatives of Wagner Group members fighting in Bakhmut shows that January 2023 was likely the deadliest month for the mercenary organisation. At least 502 are confirmed to have died, though the real figure is likely many times more. ⬇️ Image
2/ The independent Russian media outlet Verstka has analysed tens of thousands of social media posts by relatives of Wagner members with the daily reports published by the Institute for the Study of War (@TheStudyofWar), and has found clear correlations with specific operations.
3/ They include "messages in which the authors indicated the date of death, or provided supporting documents – a death certificate, an extract from the registry office, copies of posthumous award letters and letters of thanks indicating the place of death of their loved one."

1/ Corrupt officials selling information from police databases may have inadvertently contributed to recent assassinations in Russia. The Russian government is now reportedly cracking down on the theft of data from state databases.
2/ Russia has for years had a huge black market in all kinds of personal data, including from state organisations. Scammers and private detectives frequently use it to target individuals and steal from bank accounts.

3/ A recent scandal and investigation reported by the VChK-OGPU Telegram channel provides some interesting detail on how data from the Russian police has ended up on the black market. Such data is suspected of having been used to target recent assassination victims.

1/ Donbas separatist Pavel Gubarev has complained that too few Russians see occupied parts of Ukraine as Russian, and warns that if the war is lost, "You will not be able to earn money, women will stop giving you money, you will not have children, you will all be fucking drunk." Image
2/ In a video posted by Gubarev, he says that the occupation authorities in the Kherson region conducted a survey on the inhabitants' attitudes towards Russia. It found "very different" results from those living in the Luhansk and Donetsk 'People's Republics'.
3/ Gubarev argues that the inhabitants of the "new territories" have lost their "identity" as Russians because of "Ukrainian propaganda". He also complains that Russian society does not perceive the "new territories" as part of the Russian Federation.
