“But Jesus never talked about sexuality and gender.”

[A thread] 🧵

I often hear this phrase thrown around flippantly as a defense for embracing an “anything goes” approach to LGBTQ+ issues

But it’s not true. Jesus did speak clearly about human sexuality and God’s design. Image
In Matthew 19 Jesus was responding to a question about divorce. He referenced Genesis 1 in his answer.

Don’t dismiss this.

In the first chapter of the Bible God reveals two things that Jesus affirmed.

1. God’s DESIRE for humanity
2. God’s DESIGN for humanity.
God’s desire was for humans to flourish on the earth by having dominion over God’s creation.

God’s design was creating male and female, man and woman, with the command to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth with people who bear the image of God. Image
God created 2 genders. His genius design was the beauty of a man and a woman creating more life out of their union- two people joined together as “one flesh.”

This spiritual, emotional and sexual union is actually, literally, the way every person in history came into existence.
There has never been any other design or configuration given to the human race from God. No matter how many times people attempt to deviate from the original biological blueprint, male and female create human life in the image of God.
But what about Jesus?
Doesn’t he love everyone?
Doesn’t he want us to be happy?
Why did he make some people gay or trans or bi or pan if he didn’t want them to be that way?

Why didn’t Jesus ever talk about sex and gender?

Actually, he did.
Not only does Jesus affirm God’s original desire & design for sex & marriage in Matthew 19, but he also adds a command and a warning.

“What God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Jesus is actually doubling down on God’s plan, because Jesus is God and He designed it.
What we’re currently witnessing in the West is an attempt to separate what God has joined and to redefine what God designed.

This is a direct violation of the clear command of Jesus. It’s rebellion. It’s disobedience. It’s sin and it hurts people that God dearly loves.
“But doesn’t God love everyone?”

Yes He does, and His design is a reflection of that love. When we ignore His created order, we get hurt. He doesn’t want us to get hurt because He loves us so His law is for our good, not a restriction to break free from.
God’s unconditional love isn’t the same thing as His unconditional acceptance of our behavior.

When God says “DON’T” what He’s always saying is “DON’T HURT YOURSELF.”

Because He loves us, He shows us His plan on how to live. When we break God’s law, we find ourselves broken.
“But if God didn’t want me to be gay / lesbian / trans / then why did He make me this way?

God created each of us in His image. You have value and worth to God and to this world. However, none of us were born PERFECT. Each of us is flawed, broken and sinful. And we make choices.
Just because I have a desire or a craving, that doesn’t automatically translate into “This is how God made me.”

Don’t you see how this mindset could justify literally anything and everything, including crime, rape, greed, gluttony, racism and adultery?
The answer isn’t to give into every desire you have. The answer is to see how God made you- beautiful and unique in His own image- and to embrace your identity as a beloved child of God. To give your life to Jesus who gave his life for you. To be loved fully by Jesus in surrender
A war is being waged by the enemy to kill, steal and destroy (John 10:10) and the reason Satan hates us is because he hates God and WE LOOK LIKE GOD - bearing His very image.

The enemy is re-naming and re-defining reality in front of our very eyes.

Don’t listen to his lies.
God will never deceive us. Because He loves us, He’s given us the Bible to guide us. For 2,000 years the church has affirmed what God originally created- male and female made in His image for His glory.

And it’s good. Despite what the culture says.

“Fit and 50” (A confessional thread)

I’d like to share some lessons learned on my health journey of the past 15 months.

My eyes have been opened to SIMPLE changes that have had a MASSIVE impact on my overall health.

Here’s a few for you ⬇️
1. Listen to your body
My appendix burst and the near-death experience was my wake-up call to pay attention to my weight, insomnia, stressors, schedule, habits and hobbies. My body was communicating but I was ignoring all the messages it was sending me. Now I’m listening.
2. Step on the scale
I didn’t realize I was 265lbs until I was in the hospital. Truthfully, I knew I was too heavy but didn’t want to face it. I made excuses. Didn’t want to be “vain” and told myself I could always drop 10lbs anytime. But the scale judged me without emotion.

A Better Option Than Abortion
(A thread…)

For 47 years all I knew was that I was adopted. No details about my birth parents. No context. No story. Literally, no knowledge of how my life began.
My parents always made being adopted a special thing. They told me how much my birth mother must have loved me to give me a chance to live. To experience the good and the bad in life. To be who God made me to be.
I don’t remember them telling me I was adopted. I just always knew it, because they began parenting me, from the moment they picked me up at the SC Children’s Bureau in Columbia, by framing my adoption as a gift. A blessing.

PASTORS IN A PANDEMIC
{A thread}

Everyone has had a truly difficult year and the past 12 months have been brutal, refining and unpredictable. From my perspective, I’ve seen how it’s affected pastors emotionally, mentally and professionally.
The role of a pastor is most akin to that of a shepherd in scripture. They care for, guide, protect, lead and sacrifice for their congregation like a good shepherd would the flock under their care. This takes wisdom, patience, experience, tenacity.
In addition to the responsibilities that pastors shouldered pre-Covid (preaching, sermon prep, funerals, sick visits, weddings, counseling, leading staff, budgets, prayer for the church, emails, hospital visits, etc)...
