God in Us – Keeps Us from Stumbling
soundcloud.com/gerald-prater/…
John chapter 16 is an excellent picture of the important gospel message that the “Lord is always with us.” Up until this point in His ministry, Jesus had been pouring into His disciples after getting their attention and calling them to follow Him. He had shown them clear evidence
that He is God, He was with them, and that they had no reason to be afraid.

But at this point in His ministry, Jesus had begun to tell them about bad things that were going to happen. In the previous chapter He had just told them that He is the Truth (the true vine) and because
of that, the world would reject Him. He had been gently telling them for a while that He would eventually be betrayed, attacked by the world and killed. But He had also told them that these things had to happen and were part of God’s plan to save them and many others.
But when the disciples heard these words, they only focused on the negative parts of what Jesus said. They didn’t hear the good news about how this all would eventually end. They focused on the bad things and did not want any of them to happen. They wanted to avoid suffering
at all cost.

So here in John chapter 16 near the end of His earthly ministry, Jesus spends some time encouraging His disciples with this gentle reminder that He will always be with them. The world would throw everything at them in order to get them to become discouraged,
to compromise what they believed and to stumble. But throughout this chapter He promises them that He would always be with them no matter what the circumstance. Even though at times it would seem like the world system had control and was winning, the truth would be that He is
always in control and has already won.

In today’s reading at the beginning of John chapter 16, Jesus warns His disciples about how they will suffer personally because of what they believe. He is telling them these things so that when they eventually do happen, His disciples will
be able to remember that He had fore-told them and it will strengthen their faith and give them more boldness. The word of God is filled with many examples of this type of Bible prophesy (especially between the Old and New Testaments) where He reminds us that He has always been
in complete control.

So now let’s read and ponder the words of Jesus in the first four verses of John chapter 16 as He begins to encourage them as well as us today so that we won’t stumble and compromise with the world.
Jesus Warns and Comforts His Disciples
1 “These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. 3 And these things they will do to
you because they have not known the Father nor Me. 4 But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. “And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you. - John 16:1-4

God in Us – He Works Everything for Good
soundcloud.com/gerald-prater/…
Yesterday in part 2 of this devotional series I mentioned how the disciples wanted to avoid pain and suffering at all cost. They saw the declaration by Jesus that He would be betrayed and killed as the worst thing that could ever happen. Based on their own understanding, they
struggled and prayed that it should NOT happen to Him (see what Peter said in Matthew 16:22).

Now if we are honest with ourselves, we will recognize that we all have this tendency to instinctively (based on our own feelings and understanding) ask God to take away all troubles

God in Us – All Things Are For Our Good
This is a word that the Lord placed on my heart again recently that is based on the famous quote from Romans 8:28. He IS indeed working all things for good for those of us who love and trust Him.

This week as part of an end-of year activity at a local Christian school where I
serve, instead of teaching my morning chapel service I gave them my testimony and told them about how the Lord got my attention back in 2007 with that brain tumor (some of them had heard it before). After many surgical procedures it eventually led to the loss of my right eye.

In the End All Is Insanity
This is the strong theme that the LORD placed on my heart. It has to do with all of the ways that the enemy has been openly attacking the freedoms of the people of God over these past 3 years. He showed me that in the end He has always been here with us and has shown us more than
ample evidence of His presence and power over this world and all of the attacks of the enemy. He has also shown more than ample evidence of the efforts of the enemy to make us go against what He has said. While the LORD has the unbridled power to force us to obey Him and do what

Apostates Predicted
16 These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage. 17 But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord
Jesus Christ: 18 how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. 19 These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.
Maintain Your Life with God
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

This is an important word (and a very timely reminder) that the Lord gave me five years ago today that became a key focus of my ministry. As we look around and seriously ponder our current world events, we should see evidence that opens our eyes to the problem
that exists. Our battle is very much spiritual and it has been going on with increasing intensity for a very long time (really since Genesis 3). The Solution is and has always been the same and He is still patiently waiting.
Importance of the Hunger for the Truth Today

Brothers, sisters, neighbors, friends, all fellow residents of this world, I woke up this morning with a praise on my heart and this relatively short word about the importance of ultimate truth in each one of our lives today.

Two days ago we talked about our struggle with humility and the time when the disciples of Jesus asked Him who was the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Using the little child to illustrate His point, Jesus basically said that in order to be first we must deny ourselves and be
last. Then this morning this memory comes up in my feed from four years ago today (right on time) where He re-emphasized this point. Be blessed today as we already know how this story ends.

Counter-Intuitive
soundcloud.com/gerald-prater/…
My life as a Christian is counter-intuitive today. I find great victory in total surrender; great strength in my own weakness; I fight tirelessly for the freedom of others; die so that I may have LIFE; fight first to listen so that I may be heard; humble myself so that a Greater
