Back in the Adams County Courthouse this morning. Adrian gives another cellphone warning to the people in the audience, telling them people who use them during testimony will be asked to leave the courtroom. (Except for the media, of course.) #bliefnicktrial
We are down to 14 jurors. One elderly woman was removed earlier this week, and another elderly woman is not here this morning. #bliefnicktrial
Dr. Scott Denton, a forensic pathologist, is the first witness this morning. He explains to the jury what a forensic pathologist does, then tells the jurors his resume and medical background. #bliefnicktrial
Denton tells the jury he has performed about 12,000 autopsies during a 27-year career. Assistant State's Attorney Josh Jones hands him a stack of photos from Becky's autopsy that he plans to introduce as evidence. #bliefnicktrial
The first photo showed how Becky's body was received from the coroner. Paper bags are on both of her hands. They are trace evidence bags which collects evidence that falls off the fingers. #bliefnicktrial
Denton explains the pants Becky was wearing are surgical compression pants. He said the pants have a designed hole in the middle, allowing someone who is wearing them to urinate. The pants have zippers on the sides. #bliefnicktrial
The next photo shows three foam compression pads on Becky's stomach. They add support to the skin and the body. Also shown are two wounds. Denton explains most of the bleeding was done inside her body. The compression pads helped keep blood inside her body. #bliefnicktrial
Another photo shows an ice pack over her genitals. Also shown is where she recently had surgery on her stomach. The next two photos show Becky's underwear. They were not torn. Also another photo of an icepack and a towel. #bliefnicktrial
A photo of Becky's left hand shows exit and entry gunshot wounds. Denton explains a "defensive wound" like when a boxer holds up their arms to defend themselves. He calls the wound a defensive wound. #bliefnicktrial
Denton said he recovered three bullets from her body and taken into evidence. Jones also hands Denton the white foam pads in a sealed evidence bag, as well as the ice pack and the towel removed from her genital area. #bliefnicktrial
Jones also hands Denton sealed evidence bags containing the pants and underwear Becky was wearing. Jones then asked Denton to explain a sexual assault kit. #bliefnicktrial
Denton said he found fluid in Becky's vaginal area. He found no semen or fluids. He explained he performed a sexual assault kit because you "can't go back. You only get one chance." He did not see evidence of sexual assault. #bliefnicktrial
Denton describes a photo showing nine gunshot wounds to her torso. Jones then asks to show the photo to the jury. Adrian gives permission. #bliefnicktrial
Before the photo is shown, Denton explains where the bullets exited and entered Becky's body. He said she internally bled to death. Tim has yet to look at the screen while any of the photos have been shown. #bliefnicktrial
Nine wounds were to her chest, three to her right arm and two to her left hand. Denton said none of the wounds were "immediately fatal." A bullet that went through her breast into her right lung was the most fatal, but he said she bled to death. #bliefnicktrial
Denton said one bullet hit her spinal cord, paralyzing her. She had difficulty breathing because one bullet went through her lung. "Would it have been painful?" Jones asked. Schnack objects. Adrian overrules. Yes, it would have been painful, Denton said. #bliefnicktrial
Denton said he thought Becky would have still been alive for minutes after she was shot. Jones holds up a photo for the jury showing trajectory rods, explaining where the bullet wounds entered and exited body. The rest of the courtroom can't see the photo. #bliefnicktrial
Jones has no further questions. Schnack asks if Denton can tell the order in which the shots were fired. He says no. That is her only question. #bliefnicktrial
The next witness is Trent Karhliker, a forensic scientist from the Illinois State Police Crime Lab. He gives his background to the jury. He has worked for ISP for seven years. #bliefnicktrial
Karhliker explains friction ridged skin found on hands and the soles of feet. (You'll have to look up what that means yourself.) He explains fingerprints to the jury, saying there's no two fingerprints the same. #bliefnicktrial
Karhliker also explains latent fingerprints, which are made by sweat, dirt and dust. He says they are extremely delicate and can be affected by temperature, pressure and movement. #bliefnicktrial
Karhliker said he found no latent handprints from a gun at Tim's house and from a window at Becky's house. Schnack asked if Karhliker found any suitable fingerprints from Tim during his investigation. He said no. #bliefnicktrial
The next witness is Lauryn Vunetich from the Illinois State Police Crime Lab. But first, a courtroom stretch. #bliefnicktrial
She works at the forensic science laboratory in Springfield, specializing in firearm examination. She explains the NIBEN database. (You'll have to look that up yourself, too.) #bliefnicktrial
Vunetich says shell casings have markings on them. "Is it fair to say every firearm leaves different marks, just like every person has different fingerprints?" Jones asks. Vunetich says yes. #bliefnicktrial
Shell casings from Becky's home were entered into the database, and Vunetich said no correlation was made from that casing to any other unsolved crime. Schnack has no questions. #bliefnicktrial
Adrian calls for a morning recess. Asks to resume testimony at 10:15 a.m. (Time for you to get a drink or run to the bathroom if you're following along.) Jones says he has one more witness left who might take more than an hour. #bliefnicktrial
We are back. The next witness is Eric Cowick, a detective who has worked for more than seven years with the Quincy Police Department. #bliefnicktrial
At 12:53 a.m. on Feb. 23, Cowick testifies the phone found in Becky's home was connected to Facebook. He reviewed text messages earlier in the evening between Ted Johnson and Becky. Cowick said the messages were not upsetting. #bliefnicktrial
Cowick says there are no cameras in Quincy that record traffic. They are only live feeds. He reviewed Tim's phone records from AT&T and records from his laptop. Jones says he wants to talk about the extraction from the laptop first. #bliefnicktrial
Cowick reviews photos of search history on Tim's laptop. He said there were thousands of searches. Found on Tim's search history was "Illinois license plate lookup" search on Google from Feb. 14. #bliefnicktrial
Also found were searches for title and registration, a search for an Illinois plate number check, free vehicle history reports and VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) checks. #bliefnicktrial
Also searched for on Google was "Missouri license plate owner lookup." Other searches were for Missouri state records, a sample vehicle history report and a "How to Lookup Missouri License Plates and Report Bad Drivers" video on YouTube. #bliefnicktrial
Another page of search results shows a search for the license plate number that was on Ted Johnson's truck through InfoTracer.com. #bliefnicktrial
Another page of search results shows searches for searchquarry.com, "How do I find the owner of a license plate in Missouri?" on Google, a VIN ownership and owner lookup site and a search for a 2021 Toyota Tundra. #bliefnicktrial
Before Jones shows evidence of a phone call made, it's time to stretch. #bliefnicktrial
On the screen now is evidence of a call from Tim's phone to the Missouri Department of Revenue, which handles vehicle registrations and license plates. #bliefnicktrial
Another search was for the VIN number found inside Johnson's truck, followed with more searches for finding vehicle owners by VIN number at multiple websites — Quora, AutoDetective and InfoTracer. #bliefnicktrial
Other searches for vehicle owners were made at the Missouri Department of Motor Vehicles, Legal Beagle, Driving' & Vibin' and Epic.com. The searches lasted for approximately 40-45 minutes on the morning of Feb. 14. #bliefnicktrial
The searches started again on the morning of Feb. 15. Cowick then explains an extraction from Tim's phone. He reviews photos showing a Facebook page for "John Smith." Cowick said there were messages to people from John Smith to other people. #bliefnicktrial
Schnack says she won't object to messages from the John Smith account, but she would object to other message from other people based on hearsay. Adrian asks to meet with attorneys outside the presence of the jury. #bliefnicktrial
The jury is being escorted from the courtroom. Meeting with attorneys and Adrian continues. #bliefnicktrial
The attorneys come out of the judge's chambers, but bailiff Donnie Hammer announces, "We're all on a 10-minute break." #bliefnicktrial
Adrian returns. So does the jury. Adrian explains Schnack's objection is overruled. #bliefnicktrial
The Cellbrite phone extraction shows a Facebook account for John Smith. Messages on Facebook Messenger are shown. One indicates "John Smith" drives an orange Honda CRV, another indicates he has long brown hair. #bliefnicktrial
Another Messenger note from "John Smith" looking for a mountain bike on Oct. 12, 2022, was sent to another person. Money was placed in the mailbox of the person who sold the bike. Cowick is shown a photo found in Tim's garage of a 26-inch mountain bike. #bliefnicktrial
More messages from Mike Blaesing showed he was offering a blue Schwinn mountain bike. A blue Schwinn mountain bike was found about a half-mile from Tim's home. #bliefnicktrial
A photo of the found bike is shown. Cowick said the front fork of the bicycle had a scratch mark and the kickstand was broken off. There was no front reflector. #bliefnicktrial
Cowick compared the Mongoose bike and the Schwinn bike that were found. The Mongoose bike found in Tim's garage is shown, then the blue Schwinn bike is shown. Both bikes were approximately 98 centimeters in height. #bliefnicktrial
Cowick is handed photos of websites visited on Tim's phone. Before the photos are shown on the screen, Schnack objects. She says there are no time dates and stamps for the searches, and she says no one can prove who made the searches. #bliefnicktrial
Jones argues the phone is password protected. Adrian overrules Schnack's objection. On Oct. 4, a visit was made to bevfitchett.us to learn about PVC silencer tubes. A Google search was made for "Can you identify if a shotgun shell was shot out of a specific gun?"
Other searches were for "how to open window from the outside", "can I force my door open with a crowbar if I locked myself out" and how to open almost any door with easy lock picking trick at another website. #bliefnicktrial
Another search was for gunshot residue, and other searches were for washing off gunpowder residue. Another search was for if shotgun rounds were traceable. #bliefnicktrial
More searches are shown for how to open a door with a crowbar, how many cops are in Quincy, how to make a homemade pistol silencer, average Quincy Police Department response time and how check if a gun is registered to me. #bliefnicktrial
More searches are for if a WHOOP catch up if someone is not wearing it, how to clean gunpowder off your hands and if a shotgun shell was shot out of a specific gun. Jones ends his questioning. #bliefnicktrial
Schnack asks Cowick if the searches he discovered who made the searches and the time the searches were made. Cowick says they did not. Schnack asks if the searches can tell who had the phone when the searches were made. Cowick says no. #bliefnicktrial
Cowick says he can't tell if the searches were made before or after Becky's murder. He couldn't tell the order that the searches were made on the cellphone. #bliefnicktrial
Schnack asks if the Facebook messenger messages show that "John Smith" actually bought the bicycles through Facebook Marketplace. Cowick says no. Schnack asks about the bicycle found on 18th Street. Cowick said that was the first time he saw it. #bliefnicktrial
Schnack ends her questioning. Jones asks when Tim's phone was found. Cowick said it was on March 1, and it was placed in airplane mode. #bliefnicktrial
Jones says the other state crime lab technicians are not available until Tuesday. Adrian tells the jury to enjoy the weekend. "A lot of people are going to want to talk with you about this case, but I ask you not to do that," he said. #bliefnicktrial

Back in the courtroom. Adrian reminds people in the courtroom to turn their cellphones off. "Off means off," he said. "Not vibrate. Not in airplane mode."
The jury is seated. Kelly Leapley is to be the first witness of the afternoon. #bliefnicktrial
