“Lan Zhan, how did you know that you were gay?”

Lan Wangji spun around from his computer desk to face his bed. Wei Ying, sitting crossed legged, each elbow on his knees, staring at Lan Wangji intently.

“I just knew.”

Wei Ying exhaled. “No like… like how did you come out?”

That’s the thing, Lan Wangji didn’t. From the horror stories online, he knows his family is among the outliers and few that are accepting of a person’s sexuality.

Lan Wangji never had a moment to question

or think, he just was. The sky was blue and Lan Wangji was gay.

If he ever thought about who he truly wanted to be with, marriage, that person, as far back as he could remember, had always been another man.

His uncle had made off handed comments before that Lan Wangji should

bring his boyfriend to meet the family except he’d never had a boyfriend. Never felt connection,until Wei Ying.
But Wei Ying was straight so they remained friends. Best friends but nothing more.

Lan Wangji would have a boyfriend when he could find someone better for him than Wei

Ying. He had serious doubts that was possible.

“I never came out Wei Ying. Everyone knows or if they asked I’d be honest.”

Was Wei Ying being bullied? Had someone said something to him? Lan Wangji wouldn’t stand for that.

“Hm well someone asked me if we were… ya know…”

Wei Ying’s voice trailed off and Lan Wangji’s heart sank. Oh. Was he upset? Offended? For once, Lan Wangji couldn’t tell what was going on in Wei Ying’s head.

Every hesitation and half finished thought putting him on edge. Did Wei Ying not want to be seen around school with him?

Lan Wangji rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand. Why did it feel like he was losing his best friend?

“Why are you crying? Are you that upset about people thinking we’re together?” Wei Ying’s face flashed with an expression of hurt that made Lan Wangji want to crumble.

He was crying tears of frustration for another reason. Literally the opposite of what Wei Ying was asking.

To say yes, Lan Wangji is upset that someone thinks they are dating is a lie. He’d want nothing more.

But Wei Ying doesn’t like him that way. His friend wasn’t homophobic

by any means but Wei Ying would reject him if Lan Wangji said he wanted him, had thought of Wei Ying in any fantasy of his future, Wei Ying was always there.

“I don’t think I’m that awful Lan Zhan.” Wei Ying laughed. A small pitiful sound that usually was accompanied by a

self deprecating statement. “If I hear anymore rumors I’ll shut them down immediately. I won’t let your reputation go down because of me Lan Zhan.”

There it was.

“My reputation does not concern me and I don’t care what people assume about me Wei Ying.” Lan Zhan snapped. The

flood gates had already opened. Might as well say everything at one time.

“I’d be honored to have Wei Ying as my boyfriend. My reputation wouldn’t diminish with you by my side and even if it did, the only opinion I care for is Wei Ying’s.”

Wei Ying’s breath caught. “Lan Zhan…

you like me?”

Lan Wangji exhaled. “Wei Ying, I’ve loved you since the moment we met. No one has ever made me feel as happy or at peace the way you do.”

“But? I thought I annoyed you?”

“Never. And even if you did, annoyance was never directed at you. More at myself.”

There, that was it. He looked at Wei Ying and to his surprise, his friends eyes were wet with unshed tears as he patted the bed beside him.

“Lan Zhan come sit next to me?”

Lan Wangji’s legs felt like lead but he walked across the room anyways. Sitting next to Wei Ying, who

took Lan Wangji’s hand and laced their fingers together.

“It took me longer to realize than it should have but Lan Zhan I love you too.”

Lan Wangji stopped breathing. As if all the oxygen in the room had been sucked out in that very moment. Wei Ying loved him? It couldn’t be.

“No.” Because instead of his mouth staying shut his brain was rejecting the thought -Wei Ying could love him -outright.

“But I do.”

“Wei Ying, people will talk.” Lan Wangji didn’t care for that about himself but Wei Ying being hurt by what people said or thought about him -

Lan Wangji couldn’t let that happen.

“I don’t care.” Wei Ying said with such conviction. He clearly wasn’t understanding Lan Wangji.

“You do care about that. You love me like a best friend I understand that.” Lan Wangji squeezed his eyes shut. He had to push Wei Ying away

because the thought that these words were real… that this was actually happening was too much. To hope for this and it not be true would be too painful.

“I am your best friend but I love you romantically Lan Zhan. Like dating and long walks and married.” Wei Ying’s cheeks

turned pink.

Married?! Wei Ying thought about them being married?! There was no way. Lan Wangji had to drive the point home.

“Wei Ying, I have a dick.”

His friend paused blinked at him two times before he burst out laughing.

Lan Wangji knew it. He felt a lump in his throat

and emotions rising up again.

A hand cupped his cheek and soft brushes of a thumb wiping away tears. “If you couldn’t guess by the way this conversation started, I prefer it that way.”

Wei Ying smiled at him. It wasn’t his normal bright smile. Radiating so brightly

Lan Wangji was sure it challenged the sun. This one was soft, sweet, a tenderness of understanding and vulnerability.

Wei Ying was being completely honest.

“You really do? Like me, I mean.”

Wei Ying shook his head. “No Lan Zhan. I love you. More than like.”

Wei Ying moved

closer and kissed Lan Wangji’s cheek. He could have melted on the spot.

“Yes. I more than like you Lan Zhan.”

Lan Wangji’s heart was pounding loudly in his chest. Wei Ying had to be able to hear it. Surely!

“So we are boyfriends?” Lan Wangji said slowly. Caution still having

tense.

“If you want to be boyfriends that’s what I want too.”

And there it was. The start of them. Not much changed, they still walked to school together, ate lunch together but now they held hands. They hugged and cuddled with no spatial awareness.

Lan Wangji more than happy

for Wei Ying to sit in his lap, rest his head on Lan Wangji’s shoulder. Even on the hottest days in summer, holding Wei Ying’s hand was the highlight of his day.

“What made you finally decide to say something to me?” Lan Wangji asked. They were sitting near a spring behind his

family estate. Cool water up to their knees sitting side by side on a rock.

“Well, I had asked Huaisang if what I was feeling was normal. They said that it sounded like I was in love with you. Then it hit me all at once that they were right. I was.” Wei Ying laughed. “And then I

had to tell you immediately so I told you as soon as we were alone. Or tried too. You beat me to it gege.”

Lan Wangji leaned over and kissed Wei Ying’s cheek. “It doesn’t matter as long as we’re together.”

Wei Ying smiled up at him. “Forever.”
