Lots of people (especially students) have been asking me for details after news of an MoU being signed with @IMU_HQ came out in the media this month. How do you apply? Whom do you contact? Does your college have a role to play? 2/n
IN STEP aims to engage students in premier technical institutes (undergrad, postgrad and doctoral) through an online 5 month internship. The participating colleges are termed ‘IN STEP Knowledge Partners’. Knowledge partners designate one professor as a Point of Contact (PoC). 3/n
At any given time, not more than 03 proposals are taken from any college to ensure meaningful & sustained interaction. The PoC is expected to do the first level of screening. Students having ideas which may be of use to the Navy can share the same with NIIO through the PoC. 4/n
On being selected, a nodal officer from the Navy is assigned to interact with the students, guide them and help turn the idea into a useful product. If meriting scaling up, industry tie-up may also be considered through @SIDMIndia. The IPR remains with the student. 5/n
Individual students or teams (led by a professor) can participate. Selected students are given a certificate of participation / certificate of appreciation at the appropriate level. Ship visits may be organised to help the students appreciate the Naval problem statements. 6/n
Periodically, problem statements are also put out by #NIIO and students from ‘knowledge partners’ compete for the best solution. The prize includes visits to ships and even a day at sea!
The idea is to engage the students by igniting young minds, foster a culture of innovation, facilitate academia-industry tie-ups & also get useful ideas for the Navy. Many premier colleges are already partners. If you / your college is keen, please reach out to #TDAC. n/n

force a refresh
(1) “Fleets will operate more, for longer times, across a wide spectrum of missions, with diverse sets of partners, & over greater distances”. Have to deliver “persistent forms of engagement in the constabulary space, whilst having to retain the ability to ‘fight tonight’.” 2/n
(2) “In a contested peace in which interstate war is a real possibility, naval innovation is first & foremost about how technology can help maximise the effectiveness of the ‘habits of the mind’. It is about how innovation enhances a navy’s operational mentality and approach” 3/n
Thank you all for the very positive feedback on my weekly posts. As requested by some of you, I’m compiling this ‘thread of threads’ for ease of reference. Each tweet in this thread covers one topic
This week I’ll cover avenues for financial support for #startups / other industry by the Technology Development Board (TDB) @tdbgoi. Defence *is* one of the areas supported by TDB, but many defence startups are not aware of the scheme.
TDB - setup in Sept 1996 under the Technology Development Board Act (1995) - is a statutory body under the Dept. of Science & Technology @IndiaDST. A 1st of its kind organisation within the govt framework, its sole objective is commercializing fruits of indigenous research. 2/n
TDB has been doing good work across multiple sectors. For example, the new terminal at the Chennai airport uses sky lighting domes for building atriums developed by @skyshade__. Skyshade is a TDB beneficiary…as are many others.3/n
“It needs emphasis that since its earliest days, the Indian Navy was a pioneer of ‘Make in India’ and Atmanirbhar Bharat (a self reliant India), contributing not merely to its own growth, but also to the national technology ecosystem”
I find the relentless drive for indigenisation by the IN over many decades fascinating. This 🧵 has some quotes from an article by @srikantkesnur in the inaugural Indian Naval Despatch (Winter 2020). As the quotes show, we planned well ahead…starting from 1947!
“At the dawn of independence in 1947-48, the Indian Navy had authored a ‘Plans Paper’ that was audacious in scope and envisaged a two fleet navy, with two aircraft carriers, two light cruisers, eight submarines and several blue water surface ships”
Starting this week, I’ll compile (weekly) information about #NIIO#TDAC & #SPRINT from information available in various press releases, articles, speeches and books. The 🧵 this week is about the launch of the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation and it’s structures…
#NIIO was launched by Hon’ble Raksha Mantri @rajnathsingh on 13 August 2020. Dedicated structures were created for the end users to interact with academia & industry towards fostering innovation and indigenisation for self-reliance in defence
The Defence Acquisition Policy 2020 (DAP 20) envisaged Service HQs setting up IIOs within existing resources. @indiannavy already had a functional & dynamic Directorate of Indigenisation. NIIO was to build upon these indigenisation initiatives, as well as focus on ‘innovation’
