Jesse Armstrong and co. have perfected giving audiences a sense of false hope with #Succession that I don’t think we’ll see again. You give us what’s possibly the last moments of the siblings in good terms, only to tear them apart and leave them in the mud. What a series finale!
Roman might be the only one out of the core three who is actually free from trying to please their father. Kendall was right about something though, he didn’t want to be IT, and now he’s back to where his journey started; being a playboy billionaire who can do whatever he wants. Image
Shiv’s final decision is so interesting. She secured her children’s future but she’s doomed to see Tom live the life she wanted. She’s repeating her mom’s unhappy life married to a CEO, unsure if she wanted to have children to begin with, and be reduced to eye candy for Matsson. Image
And Kendall… Such sincere, yet flawed look at humanity. No wife, no children, potentially no relationship with his siblings, and never getting to prove if he was worthy to step into his father’s shoes. Maybe things will be okay, but what a devastating way to close off this book. Image
On a funnier note, coincidence or not, I think it’s hilarious the show ends on an acquisition with a new boss being crowned in the same week the real world new boss launched a new app that barely works to replace the old one. Life imitating art and vice versa.
Ultimately, I love how #Succession doesn’t reward any of the children, yet Logan’s terrible legacy will carry on despite neither of them being in charge. Kendall constantly neglecting his children, just like his father, and getting somebody killed only to be covered up.
Shiv’s love affairs. It’s no secret Logan’s relationship with women were mostly transactional, almost like Shiv’s with men earlier in the show. You see Shiv trying to understand her feelings towards Tom but between him, Nate and now Lukas you can only hope she breaks the curse.
Roman is basically a walking sexual harassment lawsuit waiting to happen. But with daddy gone, can his millions actually protect him just like Logan protected members of the company? So many questions up in the air, yet the writers managed to deliver a satisfying conclusion.
And Tom is weirdly enough both the most like Logan and the least like him. He played the long game well, but as characters like Shiv have joked, he’s also a sellout who would kiss anybody’s ass to get what he wants. Logan would never reduce himself like Tom has. Image
Yet, most likely than not, Tom will continue his legacy of corruption, misinformation, and massive success. What’s worse, he’ll possibly traumatize his children as well, making them play the game of succession down the line if he remains in power long enough.
