It seems to me that most people who complain about the federal budget have probably never looked at it.

It’s available online. Everyone can see it. You should look at it before expressing strong opinions about things like the #DebtCeiling debate.
There is no secret Woke Fund. Most of our spending goes to the things that most of us don’t want to see cut - Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Defense, Veteran’s Benefits and Interest on the Debt.
And if you look at what we take in versus what we spend, the idea of even balancing the budget so that we stop borrowing and deepening the National Debt is a hard. Why problem.

And a nearly impossible one if your stance is that no taxes should be raised on anyone ever.
Don’t just take the politicians’ word on this and treat their talking points as gospel. Look at it yourself. You’ll probably be surprised.

It’s your budget. It’s your money. Learn about it.

* a hard math problem.

This is a New York Times article from 1970. It's an interview with one of the political consultants who popularized the Southern Strategy used by Nixon and the Republican Party for decades.

It's still very relevant in today's politics.

One of the core tenets of the idea was/is to convert our resentments of each other into political gains for cynical, immoral politicians.

To turn our bitterness into votes.
Quoting the article:
"To the pure of heart it all sounded spooky and a bit repugnant because it was premised on the alleged hostility of Irishmen, Italians and Poles, whose ethnic traits were conservative, toward Jews, Negroes and affluent Yankees, whom history had made liberal.

Joe Biden got elected as a U.S. Senator at age 29. He was too young on Election Day 1972 to even be a U.S. Senator.

He left the Senate after 36 years of service, at age 66.

Then he was U.S. Vice President from age 66 to age 74.
He intended to retire. But after our nation sadly gave the Presidency to a then 70 year-old treasonous racist conman criminal named Donald Trump, Biden came out of retirement and was elected President at age 77.
The guy has spent nearly his entire adult life understanding how the American government is supposed to work.

You don’t have to like him. You don’t have to agree with him. But he’s absolutely the most well-qualified and experienced President America has ever had. Quantifiably.

The Democrats who complain about Biden are annoying.

Without this guy, Trump would have won re-election. By a lot in the electoral college. Because no other candidate could have built a coalition that included both southern blacks and moderate Republicans.
Without Biden and his 36 years of experience on Capitol Hill, the 117th Congress would not have been so historically productive. Landmark legislation. With a razor-thin majority in both chambers.
Yeah, he’s old now. But when he first got elected to Congress, he was too young to even be sworn in. He’s spent most of his life working with Congress. Understanding how it works. How to get things done there.

Donald Trump inherited just under $19 trillion dollars of National Debt. The Republicans talked about the debt constantly when Obama was President.

And then they said nothing as the debt rose to $20 trillion. Then to $21 trillion just six months and one week later.
Then $22 trillion.
$23 trillion.
$24 trillion.
$25 trillion.
$26 trillion.
$27 trillion.

And not one freaking word from the “fiscal conservatives.” All in less than a four year time span.
Then Biden gets inaugurated, inheriting a $27 trillion dollar debt, an out of control pandemic, millions of lost jobs and the aftermath of a recession and a bear market.

And, like clockwork, the Republicans care about the national debt again. Presto! It’s a miracle!

Being a Republican Speaker of the House today has to be the worst job I can imagine.

No mere mortal can be expected to herd that bunch of cats. At least a fifth of whom have rabies.
How do you get anything accomplished with a big, loud, seemingly unstable group of people who seem to hate the very concept of the federal government they were elected to help run?
Yes, there are some good people, even today, in the House GOP. But so what? They’re terrified. They know they’d better look straight ahead and keep their hands on the steering wheel or else Marge and company are going to call their army of tubes on them.

I did not totally agree with @RadioFreeTom when he wrote this back in 2018. I mostly voted for Democrats that year but also voted Republican for a high level office.

But, man, he was right. Even prophetic.
Unless somebody has completely, openly, publicly repudiated Trumpism and all that comes with it, they can’t be trusted with power.

And there doesn’t seem to be a way to get “Sane GOP” without also getting MAGA.
The whole debt ceiling drama is just the latest example of how extremism has grabbed the whole party by the nuts. And how where they stick together regardless of logic or the best interests of the country.
