Shutting down the government over an *appropriations fight* is politically acceptable.

Defaulting on debt over a *debt-limit fight* is politically unacceptable.

We should not conflate the two.

This is why Republicans almost always lose.

We pick the wrong fights.

With the wrong pressure points.

With the least leverage.

Then we fail.

Then we pout.

Then we keep losing.

Then we get more angry.

Republicans are comfortable losing.

Winning is unfamiliar territory.

I’m eager to see any better Republican plan that can get 218 House votes, 60 Senate votes, and Biden’s signature.

We couldn’t even get this done with Rs controlling all 3 in 2017.

House Rs should hold the line during the appropriations process.

Pass the levels we want.

Take it or leave it, Biden and Senate Ds.

Shut down the government, if they don’t.

Again, I’ve been a loud critic—for years—of @SpeakerMcCarthy.

I vocally opposed his election as speaker.

He’s bad on the tech fight.

But the criticisms of him on the debt fight are off the mark.
