1/ Russia's missile defence system is supposed to be able to detect a football-sized object from 8,000 km away. However, corruption is said to have left it "full of holes" and the head of Russia's Space Forces may now face prosecution, as a scandal at the Russian MOD deepens. ⬇️ Image
2/ I've previously highlighted the scandal, which has reportedly spawned a separate investigation into corruption in Russia's National Defence Control Centre (NDCC) that has led to the arrest of Major General Vyacheslav Lobuzko.
3/ Corruption is also reported to be at the heart of the scandal affecting Russia's giant Voronezh radars. Contractors are said to have widely used cheap and unsuitable foreign-made components. Tests have reportedly found this has seriously affected the radars' performance.
4/ The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel reports that an inspection revealed a wide divergence between the performance claimed by the radar's manufacturer, RTI Systems, and the actual performance. This, however, is said to have been known about in the MOD but was covered up. Image
5/ VChK-OGPU reports that the reason why is that "Alexander Golovko, Commander-in-Chief of the Space Forces and Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Military Defence Forces, did not want to let down one of his closest friends, Major-General Vyacheslav Lobuzko." Alexander GolovkoVyacheslav Lobuzko
6/ Lobuzko became a senior manager in RTI's defence division after his retirement from the Space Forces in 2000. He worked for the company until 2019.
7/ As VChK-OGPU puts it, "it was Lobuzko who, since 2006, actively promoted and controlled the money for the construction of Voronezh stations for the detection ballistic and cruise missiles.
8/ "With his help, the military acceptance and command of the Aerospace Forces were put into operation and then put on combat duty new stations of the Missile Attack Warning System (SPRN) and signed contracts for the construction of the next radar stations."
9/ Now, however, the corruption and cover-up appear to have been exposed. As a result, a source says that "the issue of bringing Golovko to criminal responsibility is currently under consideration." /end

1/ Further to @BBCSteveR's excellent review of how the Russian press is responding to yesterday's mass drone attack in Moscow (see below), the 'playbook' issued to the Russian media on how to report on the attack appears to have been leaked. ⬇️
2/ The independent Russian news outlet Meduza reports that "the pro-government media have been told how to cover the drone attack on Moscow: to highlight the 'successful air defence work' and emphasise that the goals of the 'provocation' have not been achieved."
3/ "The media 'are asked to use the following approaches':

✹ to draw attention to 'successful air defence work';

1/ Ukrainian deception operations and recent border incursions are reportedly creating great tension among Russian forces on the front line in Ukraine. Russian troops are said to have been moved from Ukraine to guard the border in the Belgorod region. ⬇️ Image
2/ The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel reports that according to a source, there is "an extremely nervous situation in the ranks of the Russian Armed Forces due to the increasingly frequent manoeuvres of the Ukrainian military."
3/ "On the night of 29 May, for example, an offensive by the Armed Forces of Ukraine was once again announced across the front line, with a number of posts reporting an attack."

1/ Leaked documents from the Russian occupation authority in the Kherson region show the arbitrary and likely extremely corrupt process by which Russian companies get approval to take over and loot Ukrainian firms in occupied regions. ⬇️ Image
2/ Russia controls, fully or partially, five regions of Ukraine:
- Luhansk and Donetsk, controlled by Russian puppet 'People's Republics';
- Crimea, annexed into Russia proper since 2014;
- and Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, ruled by Russian 'military-civil administrations' (VGAs). Image
3/ A billionaire Russian businessman is reported to have planned in detail a takeover of the newly occupied territories' biggest industrial concerns. However, there are thousands of much smaller businesses that have been left abandoned due to the invasion.

1/ In the latest episode of official paranoia about the colours blue and yellow in Russia, a man in the Leningrad region was arrested for displaying the flag of the Russian Air Force. Local people and law enforcers apparently mistook it for the Ukrainian flag. ⬇️ ImageImage
2/ 'Caution, News' (ON) reports that police in Volkhov, east of St Petersburg, were called to an alcohol store where a man was reported to be standing "with Ukrainian symbols". A squad of Rosgvardia (Russian National Guard) members was sent there and arrested 20-year-old Denis B. Image
3/ According to ON, "The guy, who used to play football for the city, explained that he was not holding a Ukrainian flag, but a symbol of the Russian Air and Space Forces (it also uses a combination of yellow and blue colours), to which he had a direct connection.

1/ Russia has reportedly considering hiring Wagner Group mercenaries to protect its border following last week's incursions, but has been unable to do so, probably due to legal obstacles. Instead, it's said to have turned to rehiring former Interior Ministry members. ⬇️ Image
2/ The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel reports that according to a source, "the border incursion in the Belgorod region forced an urgent search for ways to protect the "porous" border.
3/ "As a result, negotiations were held with the Wagner PMC to contract for the creation of "border incursion suppression groups". These were to be groups of 100-300 people who would move as quickly as possible to the locations of border incursions in "old Russia."

1/ Sergei Shoigu's chestful of medals has been highlighted by @rshereme, who points out that the Russian Defence Minister has never served in the military despite his uniform and decorations. But the full story is both ridiculous and revealing. ⬇️
2/ Shoigu, as Roman notes, is a civilian – he was originally Boris Yeltsin's Minister of Emergency Situations (equivalent in US terms to the head of FEMA), appointed way back in April 1991. He served in that role until Putin made him Defence Minister in May 2012. Image
3/ A native Tuvan (his ethnicity is an important consideration), Shoigu is the longest-serving Russian defence minister since Count Dmitry Milyutin (1861-1881). His corruption and incompetence have been criticised for having catastrophic effects on the Russian armed forces.
