Thank you Dr. Kowalski for your very detailed technical brief on UV.

It was fascinating to see the impact of genomics, orientation & medium on efficacy.

And it was thought provoking to see the modeling that shows UV could reduce COVID case waves by 98%.

Thank you @EdRubinstein for teaching us that Infection Prevention & Sustainability are not in tension - in fact implementing things like reusables & sophisticated engineered systems are key to both.

👏👏👏 ImageImage
Thank you Dr. Titus Wong for your courage & insight to lead BC IPC in researching & implementing Engineered Infection Prevention solutions into Healthcare Facilties & mass transit.

Thank you, Dr Klompas, for encouraging us to challenge Dogma and to accept new paradigms as the evidence presents itself.

Thank you clearly laying out your personal journey to switch from "Droplet" to "Airborne" paradigm for SARS2 transmission.

👏👏👏 Image
Thank you to @CanadamasQ, Swenco Medical, @PADMmedical @CAPPEM2 for donating Made in 🇨🇦 respirators & plant based medical masks to conference attendees.

👏👏👏 ImageImage
Thank you @VicLeungIDdoc for teaching us about C auris.

Thank you as well for your extraordinary leadership throughout the pandemic - teaching about airborne transmission, adding air purifiers to patient rooms, & moving vulnerable LTC residents into better ventilated spaces. ImageImage
Many thanks to @keithmcglone55 for doing an excellent job on the Scientific Committee & for his professional moderation of many sessions.

Thank you to Kelli & Heather & Carly & all the organizers for a great conference.

A special thank you to Gerry, for her unwavering commitment to IPAC, to patients, to industry partners, to collaboration, to professionalism, to progress, & to always doing the right thing right.
It was great to catch up with so many ppl after 3 years.

It feels like such a privilege now, the things we took for granted before.

The renewed spirit was palpable & energizing.
I especially want to thank everyone who showed such keen interest & enthusiasm for Engineered Infection Prevention technologies & better masks & respirators Made in 🇨🇦.

You've certainly renewed my optimism for a better healthcare future & for that I can't thank you enough. ☺️
Safe trip home everyone!

Stay healthy.

'Look forward to seeing you next year. 😊 ImageImageImage

Sigh.

Here's just one example of the pathetic state of the peer-reviewed journal industry in medicine.

It costs $59. to access a "review of reviews" that is concerned with the poor quality of face mask reviews that itself only scored a mediocre 7/10 for "quality".

Duh. ImageImage
"Conclusions: Guideline development groups need to take care to choose outcomes that are of most importance to those who are the target of guidance."

Duh.

I was taught that 80% of environmental HAIs are due to touch.

After 14 years in the field I seriously doubt that's the case.

It seems more likely that 80% of environmental HAIs are due to bioaerosols.
That's not to say that fomites don't play a role. They do. Next to the patient there is certainly oral / nasal / ocular direct transfer possibility.
But I think in lost cases fomites are more likely to be temporary landing pads.
It's very easy to re-aerosolize bacteria & virus from most surfaces with touch & air movement.

Microbes on the floor end up on overbed tables in short order. They don't walk there.

Walking across the floor liberates microbes into the air.

What's the risk of eating & drinking on a plane while wearing an elastomeric respirator?
The internal volume of my respirator is about 98 ml.

My normal tidal volume is ~500 ml.
When I breath hold I take a larger breath first, ~1,000 ml.

I exhale into the mask first before inhaling after taking a bite or sip so I've delivered 1,000/98 = ~ 10 volumes of dilution.

Residual would be near zero but let's assume worst case 10%.

Meet my new friend, Elmer.

Elmer is a pandemic healthcare hero.

He works at a small First Nations hospital in rural Manitoba.

Elmer bought elastomeric respirators for each HCW in his hospital. Image
Elmer created negative pressure rooms using portable HEPA filters. ImageImage
