This dreadful AI image of Abbey Road has reminded me of my favourite Abbey Road story... no, not the hoary old conspiracy theory about the cover (which incidentally features in my current book) but the "guy in the background" - whose name was Paul Cole
Cole was an American - on holiday with his wife and sick of visiting art galleries and museums. So instead, in August 1969, was wandering down Abbey Road when he spotted a group of policemen and started engaging them in conversation.
Behind them - he notices a bunch of "kooks" walking back and forth as they are photographed. Thinks no more of it.
A year later - his wife is learning to play "Something" on the piano. and has bought the Beatles LP Cole picks it up, looks at pic... and goes "that's me."
The Beatles - and George Harrison in particular actually had significant visa problems in Hamburg as any fan knows. But more to the point - how the fuck do you misspell "Beatles"
Harrison was actually deported from Germany in 1960 - and the band were deprived of their star guitarist.
Cannot stand the 'we never had problems in the old days' people - because it's simply not true. And anyway Arron Banks is 57. He was six when we entered the EEC and just a twinkle in the eye when George was gettign kicked out of Germany.
"The most intolerant generation in history" .... I think the rest of history might want a word.
You'll be unsurprised to hear that he's now claiming he's been cancelled by a birthday party 🎉
When I was a teen there was a moral outrage over the Beastie Boys coming to the UK... panic that VW logos would get pinched off cars... and Frankie got banned for sexy lyrics all whipped up by the right wing press and Tory MPs. Don't get me started on Section 28 ...
That National Conservative lot have a statement of 10 principles. If you're wondering why so much religious stuff is coming out of their conference then look at principle 4
I'm fairly sick of people - particularly someone in that job - having a constant go at people of my childrens' generation. Compared to the hedonistic me me me of my own Generation X many of these young people are a cut above. I for one do believe that the children are our future.
Wow. And I was this many years old when I discovered that the song was originally written as the title song to a biopic about the life of Muhammad Ali and specifically his refusal to fight in Vietnam. Mind absolutely blown
