In Singapore, @SecDef begins speech shouting out his Ukrainian counterpart. #SLD23
Austin is delivering what sounds almost like a valedictory speech, hailing the "historic progress" made in the region by the Biden administration #SLD23
"America’s partnerships are bringing the region closer together to help keep it free, open and secure," says @SecDef, laying out numerous initiatives across Asia where the US is buttressing regional militaries. He has not said the word "China" once. #SLD23
Never mind! He smiles and then...
PRC "continues to conduct alarming number of risky intercepts of US and allied aircraft flying lawfully in international airspace"
"We do not seek conflict or confrontation, but we will not flinch in face of coercion and bullying" #SLD23
Austin says that "conflict is not imminent nor inevitable," and calls on China to engage more seriously with the US #SLD23
Vietnamese scholar @BichTTran1 asks @SecDef that, given deepening US-Vietnam cooperation, whether "being a Communist is not a problem, but being a revisionist is." Austin has some trouble responding, points to US focus on securing Indo-Pacific openness and prosperity #SLD23
"We are not trying to create a NATO in the Indo-Pacific," says @SecDef, but welcomes European engagement in the region #SLD23
Chinese official publicly responds to Canadian defense minister @AnitaAnandMP's claim that China is "a disruptive force" in the region, says that this remark was "destructive" itself. Accuses her of operating with "assumed orders," I think (translation was a bit rough).
"The danger of catastrophe is near," says @prabowo, Indonesian defense minister. But adds that he is of the opinion that Xi and Biden are "wise leaders" and "aware of the burden on their shoulders." #SLD23
Quite remarkable. Indonesian defense minister @prabowo puts forward a Ukraine-Russia peace plan that would call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, mutual withdrawal by 15km by both parties in order to create a demilitarized zone, and referendums in disputed territory.
This seems a non-starter. @prabowo says there are two equal sides/viewpoints to every conflict, which, of course, flies in the face of the West's position and rhetoric on Russian aggression. #SLD23
.@JosepBorrellF is now speaking. He doesn't appear willing to respond directly to that striking Indonesian proposal.
Okay, here @JosepBorrellF responds: We don't want a peace which is a peace of the cemeteries, a peace of surrender, a peace of the stronger.
The question is how do we finish the war. And that is why we keep supporting Ukraine. #SLD23
A round of questions triggers a strong response from @prabowo, who insists he is not equating aggressor with the invaded. But he coolly suggests Europeans are having an "emotional" response. #SLD23
.@prabowo: "There are violations of sovereignty not only in Europe. Ask our brothers in the Middle East, ask the Africans, how many countries have invaded them?"
"We in Asia have our share of conflict and war, more bloody, more disastrous than what’s being experienced in Ukraine"
Ukrainian defense minister @oleksiireznikov says @prabowo 's plan "sounds like a Russian plan, not an Indonesian plan." #SLD23

China’s defense minister Li Shangfu is speaking, piling into the United States — though not mentioning the US by name — for its hegemonism and selective approach to international norms #SLD23
"So-called rules-based international order never tells you what the rules are and who made these rules," Li says. And argues that this order "only follows the interests and rules of a small number of countries." #SLD23
In what may be the most ungainly and unnecessary metaphor of the Dialogue, Li says China believes in "big pies of cooperation, not small cakes that are self-serving and exclusive." Casts China as a benign agent of global development and prosperity. #SLD23
The Chinese embassy in Washington just emailed journalists a five-chapter pamphlet on "US Hegemony and Its Perils"
Pretty thin gruel, culminating with this doctrinaire conclusion that rings quite hollow coming from a regime that is entertaining the invasion of Taiwan, has "bullied" Hong Kong's democrats into submission and turned Xinjiang into a dystopian experiment in surveillance & control.
American misdeeds from the past, including the hideous legacy of supporting Cold War-era anti-democratic coups, are abominable. But don't think Beijing is scoring the points it thinks it is by calling them out now. You can read the full thing here: mailchi.mp/d5e8cc277c9f/0…
"Hungary is the lone-star state of Europe," Orban says in English to @CPAC.
Orban says that Hungary is "a nation of 15 million people" in the heart of Europe. For a leader who supposedly obsesses over national borders, he sure doesn't mind counting those outside of his.
"I tell you the truth: We introduced a zero tolerance of racism and anti-Semitism," says Orban, calling any media who report otherwise fake news. He then goes on to attack "progressive NGOs."
Biden's up, talking about the pandemic. "We're mourning more than 4.5 million people" — though the real number is certainly far higher. #UNGA
Biden warns of "universal principles being trampled in the pursuit of naked political power... We stand in my view at an inflection point in history."
Biden says we are closing a period of "relentless war" and opening one of "relentless diplomacy." He says our own success is "bound up in others succeeding as well." A pointed repudiation of Trumpism.
Bolsonaro is opening the #UNGA session with angry attacks on socialism and the legacy of his political rivals.
Bolsonaro touts a new railway permit system akin to the "US model" — does he know the state of the US train system?
"We believe the traditional nuclear family is the... foundation of civilization," says Bolsonaro. A bit more lonely with Mike Pompeo now a private citizen
Some personal news:
🎶This land is your land, this land is my land🎶
I'll have more to say later. I've lived here for three decades, but didn't naturalize earlier in part out of a kind cosmopolitan privilege and reticence to surrender my Indian citizenship (India does not allow dual-nationality). But this is my home, who I am and where I belong.
The ceremony, held in a high court near the supreme court, was deeply beautiful and emotional. The judge and speakers, most of whom were also naturalized citizens, spoke of our bonds of solidarity and civic duty, of America's imperfection and our potential to realize its promise.
