When you add this to what Blinken said yesterday about the state of the Russian and Ukrainian armies, its clear that those with pretty good intelligence are growing increasingly bullish on the chances for a major success from the Ukrainian counteroffensive.
Secretary Blinken's speech was probable the most extraordinary attack on the state of the Russian military by a top figure in the US government so far. He mocks their condition then says the Russians have suffered "more than" 100000 casualties in the last 6 months alone. Image
I would guess the mockery comes from intelligence they receive on the state of Russian armed forces. Much has been made by analysts about the Russian army learning and improving--I have a sense neither Wallace or Blinken are being told this is the case.
All I will add is that what the Ukrainians are doing with this counteroffensive is already of a magnitude greater in terms of planning and organization than anything we have seen so far in this war. The shaping operations and pre-offensive attrition seem really well conceived
They have assembled and equipped the most well trained and prepared assault force we have seen in the war, and they have spent the last six months wearing out Russian forces, particularly in Bakhmut.
They are giving this counteroffensive the best possible chance to succeed.

Lots of talk about another incursion into Russia in Belgorod Oblast, by Russian volunteers (one imagines Ukrainian sponsored....)
Also reports of explosions in Belgorod city itself.
Ukrainians clearly putting pressure on Putin to divert Russian forces to defend Russia's own border. Its shocking just how few troops the RUssians seem to have on their border with Ukraine--twice now irregular forces seem to have basically moved in easily

Russia has now visually confirmed to have had 2000 tank losses. Of course the real number (including those behind Russian lines, or damaged and found to be unrepairable, will be much higher.
The vulnerability of tanks, especially Russian tanks, is something I talked about in my midweek update. open.substack.com/pub/phillipspo…
These losses are enormous. Russia will have lost many times the number of tanks that the UK, France and Germany maintain together. Up to 5 times as many.

Hi Everyone, just sent out my weekend update on substack--number 30 which is hard to believe.
open.substack.com/pub/phillipspo…
Its mostly about the Belgorod Oblast raid and the coming counteroffensive. Seems a conscious Ukrainian attempt to compensate for one of their greatest handicaps in this war--that Russian can invade them from anywhere at anytime-but Ukraine cant attack Russian soil directly
Clearly the Russians have taken great advantage of this to leave their border weakly defended--and Ukraine, in preparing their counteroffensive-wants the Russians to send more forces there.

Just sent out a mid-week substack on saturday (apologies people). Its about the question of tanks. Tanks are not obsolete at present, they are just very vulnerable. What is obsolete, though, is the view of Russian armored capabilities.
phillipspobrien.substack.com/p/no-tanks-are…
The Russians have probably lost almost 3000 tanks so far (2000 have photographic proof--Ukr claims 3900, so split the difference). Basically the Russians have lost something equivalent to 9 or 10 times the losses of German armor at the Battle of Kursk.
Or in today's comparisons. Russian tank losses are approx 5 times as high as all the tanks maintained by the UK, France and Germany.

Who has suggested that tanks are obsolete at this moment? I’ve not seen someone make that argument.
I wrote an article a year ago which said the tank was ‘heading’ towards obsolescence if it could not be protected from less expensive systems, but never said tanks were obsolete now. Just intrigued who might have said that. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
Thanks for chipping in everyone, but no one has come up with an example of someone calling tanks obsolete right now. Musk called them death traps (which particularly for Russian tanks seems pretty accurate). Especially considering what was said about Russian tanks earlier.

From Kyiv will fall in a few days, to Russia can’t defend its own borders, how different this war is than the analytical community said before Feb 24, 2022
For those of you wondering what’s happening, a Russian group is claiming to be leading an insurrection.
Looks like the insurgency is picking up steam. ;)
