Been pondering @GeorgeMonbiot 's #Regenesis and the reaction to it for months. The struggle is that it implicitly acknowledges and accepts a view of humanity and the rest of the biosphere as distinct from each other in the most fundamental way. 🧵1/10
Monbiot is making us acknowledge something obvious. We can wander through rewilded or sustainably managed land, but alone among species we can no longer all subsist on it. 2/10
Hard to hear, and it threatens the idea of #foodsovereignty, at least in the privileged north. 2.5/10
But this issue of unsustainable land use for farming is only one, albeit massive, manifestation of the extractive economy. The #Regenesis solution is only partial. It does not fundamentally address #limitstogrowth. (Clearly #Regenesis can't be criticised on that basis!). 3/10
the #Regenesis thesis clashes with the view that we need to reconnect with nature - deal locally; look our impacts in the eye - in order to work with Earth and heal together. Money and machines get in the way. It's not just a view - it's something felt in the bones. 4/10
Coming to terms with the fact we can't all directly plug into the ecosystem without condemns billions of people and other lifeforms is hard - perhaps because without that reconnection it's difficult to see how we can ever fix the wider problems of ... 5/10
#limitstogrowth and the extractive economy. Magicking protein and fat out of air and sun won't actually kill the cancer of economic growth. So what's the answer? ... 6/10
Well there's #emotionalcomposting to be done in realising that we might be in an impossible bind. The problem to solve might then not be how to fix the world, but how to respond personally ... It might be everyone seeing different economies and efficiencies ... 7/10
The solution of a million solutions. Solein burger with a side of fat hen, followed by dandelion heads and hawthorn buds picked while I stroll through the rich ecosystem for me please. 8/10
... and if I could take the occasional carefully managed turn at being the predatory 'lynx' that keeps the herbivores in check, if I could feed my family on the spoils, I wouldn't turn it down. 9/10
Who knows where this leads. But right now, this is the cherishing time. 10/10
