It is time that textbooks & revision websites updated their #feminism sections. This is wrong. Radical Feminism is anti essentialist, it doesn't say that 'men are the enemy' but that patriarchy is the enemy of us all & that we can all change for the better simplysociology.com/radical-femini…
"Radical feminists believe that men are the enemy and that marriage and family are the key institutions that allow patriarchy to exist." No. Marriage & the isolated, hetersexist, nuclear family are indeed sites of patriarchal operation & socialisation but not the only ones.
"For radical feminists in order for equality to be achieved patriarchy needs to be overturned. They argue that the family needs to be abolished and a system of gender separatism needs to be instituted for this to happen." Ha, ha, ha!
Yes, patriarchy as a system of social governance needs to be ended. 'The Family' is not a homogeneous monolith & can take many forms. There is nothing wrong with families. What's problematic are negative gender roles, hierarchies, isolation, pressure of gendered scripts.
'gender separatism' wth is this? Separatism can be strategic, such as women-only leadership or events. I would call that self-organisation. Separatism can be full-time, eg women's land, has a proud history in women's liberation movement but is isolated & not mainstream.
Several Radical Feminists did not see it as a strategic method, saw it as dropping out of society rather than staying within it to change it. Women-only spaces are temporary & strategic within society, self-organisation has a proud history in feminism, & Trade Unions for example.
"separatism is unobtainable due to heterosexual attraction" ha, ha, ha! Don't worry, as the Leeds Revolutionary Feminists said, celibacy is always an option!
Seriously though, this is just more political misogyny (as famous American Radical Feminist Andrea Dworkin argued) because it simplifies, reduces & ridicules Radical Feminism, a complex, political theory & activism with a long & proud history.
Radical Feminism is dismissed so it doesn't have to be taken seriously. The message of Radical Feminism is revolutionary. It is a revolutionary social movement for change, for all; not just a changing of the guard.
Radical Feminism is not about turning the tables & putting a few women in place of men in charge of a corrupt & unequal world; it's about toppling the table over & building something new for everyone.
Fundamentally, Radical Feminism is about changing power. It's about understanding & changing power from something one uses over others, to something that is shared amongst for the benefit of all (praise to the late Cynthia Cockburn, feminist antimilitarist & political theorist).
I think there are 4 defining features of RF, that can distinguish it from other schools of feminism, though it shares an end to sex-discrimination in all its forms: all schools of feminism are working for. But, RF sees this as a stop along the way to liberation, not an end point.
RF has similar broad aims to all feminism – equal rights for women vis a vis men in all social, cultural, political, economic institutions etc.
But can be distinguished by 4 main points
1.Recognises existence of patriarchy
2.Promotes women-only organisation and leadership
3.Defines male violence against women as a keystone of women’s oppression
4.Extends definition of male violence to analyse the industries of pornography and prostitution

"A London-based youth worker said the policy placed the emphasis “on vulnerable young people, rather than tackling the inequalities that lead to knife crime”." theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/j…
This is absolutely disgusting victim- blaming. It's punishing people for being in a punishing situation caused by the violence of poverty & exclusion. But rather than address the poverty & exclusion it blames victims of it & seeks to cause more pain.
Happy people who feel that they matter to themselves & others, who have enough to live not just survive, who feel part of & seen by their communities, who believe they have a future & look forward to it... rarely commit violent street crime or end up taking someone's life.
Gender essentialism is sexist, it teaches us that all men are inherently superior to all women, just because they are male. In all areas of life. Unfortunately I think most believe this & it's deep seated. Gender essentialism is sexist, homophobic, patriarchal. It fuels bullshit
Gender essentialism teaches us that all men by nature are hunters & fighters while women desire to be pregnant & raising babies in a cave. It tells us women relate to people & men to things. Men want success outside the home & women are satisfied with domestic bliss. It tells us
that men biologically want to shag around lots of women & women naturally want to be monogamous. It's also linked to militarism & teaches us that all men in their core want to fight in a war to prove themselves to other men & impress women & matter to themselves. It teaches us
Andrea Dworkin described biological essentialism as the most dangerous movement on earth.
Many students haven't heard term before, or unsure what it means. Essentialism has the word essence in it, not like a perfume essence, but like a person's core, soul, or fundamental part of them. Gender essentialism says that men & women are different in essence & it's innate.
Gender differences are supposedly biological differences that are essential, meaning they are inescapable, because they are part of someone's core essence, in their genes. So men are aggressive & bred to hunt & fight, & women are nurturing & caring & respond to others needs.
If schools have time to do a workshop on sexual consent, that's good, & they should, & it's something. But all this has to start earlier, in early years. Plus, schools aren't a replacement for society & can only do so much. But yes, if the one, the only place young ppl can hear a
..different mssg then it's really important they hear it in that institution. Safe space to get real & be honest is welcomed by young ppl. Talking about gender expectations & myths is welcomed. Yes there should be space for this & it needs to be done skilfully.
I've delivered such training, including to men only groups. Here's some of the things we need to talk honestly about. These are sort of things that come up: why are men blamed for everything; girls want bad boys then when we do that we get blamed; girls like boys who are dicks;
"Blunkett - "identity politics" must not be allowed to create an environment in which schoolboys were unfairly judged, following accusations of sexual harassment sweeping British private schools." Erm, sexual assault is a legal matter, not ID politics! telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/04/0…
"view that there was a "rape culture" in many British schools & colleges was "shocking". He added that if this view was widely accepted it could have "dangerous consequences" for boys unfairly accused of sexual misconduct." Ffs! What about the "dangerous consequences" for girls
So, pupils talking about experiences of sexual harassment, assault, possibly other kinds of sexual violence allegedly perpetrated by male pupils & allegedly not dealt with adequately by the schools is "dangerous" for boys & is in fact just making false allegations? Wtf?!
Safe streets for women #ReclaimTheseStreets#ReclaimTheNight what can be done? When I was researching my book on feminist activism & particularly Reclaim the Night marches, women often gendered public space as default male. Women would say that RtN marches 'took back' 'took over'
'reclaimed' public space in their town/city centres. So much concrete, steps, bridges etc. Likewise, when on RtN marches, hostile men watching often receive these protests in exactly the same way, as incursion, trespass, invasion, takeover. Many times I've been on RtN & heard...
hostile men bystanders shout stuff like'get in the kitchen' 'go home' 'these are our streets'. So women are not wrong in perceiving public space as default male. We will not end sexualised male violence against women overnight, but we can change this messaging by changing cities.
