On June 6, 1944, Allied Forces invaded Normandy in an effort to liberate Western Europe from Nazi Germany's occupation. The operation involved 156,000 American, British and Canadian troops who were transported by over 5,000 ships and landing craft to five different beaches. 
D-Day marked the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe. The successful landings provided a foothold for the Allied forces to begin pushing into France and eventually Germany, ultimately leading to Germany's surrender and the end of the war.
The Normandy landings remain significant as they represented a heroic and costly battle that many soldiers fought and lost their lives in.
The bravery and sacrifice shown by these soldiers cannot be forgotten for it is the ultimate example of the price paid in blood to preserve freedom.
