One Piece (Anime Staff) #01
Animator: Ryo Onishi

He's the kind of animator we might call a true artist. Personally, one of my favorites. today I'm going to talk about my 5 favorite Ryo Onishi scenes within One Piece. Check out!!!
#05 - Mugiwaras Vs Oars.

In Thriller Bark, Onishi is responsible for the entire outcome of this fight. Which was a big hit from Staff in leaving him in charge.

#04 - Luffy Fighting.

Sabaody is definitely the arc where he shines and most appears within the anime. The way he choreographs the characters is beautiful.

#03 - Mugiwaras Vs Kuma

We can say that Onishi is a master of character acting. It is very strong to see how he abuses this particularity.

#02 - Luffy's despair

One of my favorite scenes of the entire series. Luffy is destroyed, in a scene that Onishi adapts with mastery and manages to convey the character's feelings perfectly.

#01 - Zephyr Vs Kizaru

The only movie scene here, and in fact, the most powerful. Here's everything, effects, choreography. It's definitely insane.

Ryo Onishi is indeed a legend! In addition to being one of my favorite animators, I saw that many who follow me do not know him, so I made this post to let everyone know who this animator is. Thank you very much!!

One Piece: Anime hiatus announced.

The series' official accounts announced that the One Piece anime will go on BREAK for 6 months and will only return in April 2025.

Do you want to know the reasons for this super important decision? Check Out!!! Image
Released in 1999, the One Piece anime throughout its 25-year history has followed a different production style than what is known today. Therefore, it is a long-production anime, in other words, its staff is always working, through a rotation scheme. Image
Basically, if a director starts working on episode X, as soon as he finishes the whole directing and supervision process, which can take 3 to 6 months (on average), he will soon be tasked with being in charge of another episode. Image

#01 - Question

Hatchofly_: How did you become interested in animation? And why and when did you decide to become an animator?

Vincent Chansard: kind of gradually, at 15 i was kind of a random kid with no particular interest, i discovered drawing at that time and decided i wanted to become a mangaka. Fast forward a bit to when i was 17-18 and leaving highschool for a general art prep school. Absolutely hated the whole art thingy in that school, it was really not for me. But on the bright side there were a few discovery days about animation. There i met dope people, people that were just like me, had similar interests etc. Of course that year i failed every single entrance exam i took, then the year after i went back to prep school but for animation this time. At the time mind you, even though it was an animation program, i was pretty much only interested in character design, i was like " yeah, i'm gonna work for disney and dreamworks like Nicolas Marlet". I failed once again every single exam i took that year, and had to go to a school i did not want to attend. That year started with quite the depression, but failing repeatidely kind of allowed me to get free from all the external pressure, the expectations, the trap of potential. Thanks to the people there i embraced that i was just an average joe and would remain that way, but understood that it was actually completely fine to just be someone unremarkable! I now started thinking about what i liked, what i enjoyed and what brought me fun, instead of thinking of what was popular, of grand goals, of what others wanted and were looking at. That's kind of when i started animation, as in actually animating characters, i had so much fun, i knew it was what i wanted to do, and love doing it no matter what, and so i kept at it!Image
#02 - Question

Hatchofly_: After going to different art/animation schools, that's part of what got you where you are today. Do you think you could have learned more or more quickly by working on your own with the resources you can find on the Internet etc. ? Knowing that your answers may help some beginners to position themselves.

Vincent Chansard: on the technical aspect surely, but the only good things about schools arn't exactly their teachings. Some people have the chance to find very early on what they want to do, but i had to wait to be 21 to know for sure, and some people find it even later in life. Without going to school i for one would'nt have found out. School is never gonna teach you much on the technical aspect, you will never get good because of school, but if you dont know what you want to do school is a great way to find out. An other very underestimated aspect of school is the social aspect. The people you meet there, be it student or teachers can become pivotal figures in your life. A lot of who i am comes from my friends and teachers i met during the self constructing years of my animation school life. Just by talking to people i can usually tell who went to a school and who did not, who went through actual life defining event, met, fought and worked alongside real human for days on end for several years. When talking about school, i allways encourage people to, if they can afford it, go for the cheapest option, and expect the school to not teach you anything. Then, work a lot by yourself and with the people there outside of the school curiculum. Do fan animation, exercises, real life sketching etc.But for your own mental health, and the one of people around you, if possible i encourage everyone to not have your bedroom as only life experience. But, again to answer the question, yes, if you know allready exactly what you want to do, you can absolutly learn any technical skill without school.Image
