Today marks 40 years since the people of Islington North first elected me as their MP.

I want to take this opportunity to thank some of the amazing people, groups and campaigns that have changed our community for the better.
Thank you to Islington North Labour Party for your support and solidarity over the course of 10 General Elections.

Local democracy is the heart of our movement — I am determined as ever to campaign alongside my community for a more equal, sustainable & peaceful world. Image
Over the past 40 years, our community has achieved huge victories.

Saving the Number 4 bus, preventing the closure of Whittington A&E, protecting the Jewish Burial Ground, and defending Gillespie Park, to name a few!

When we come together, we can win. Image
If you want to see what a kinder world would look like, visit a community centre.

Thank you to Brickworks, Mildmay, Hilldrop, Highbury Roundhouse, Elizabeth House, Whittington Park, Andover, Hornsey Lane & Caxton House for empowering local people to build spaces of solidarity.
Mr. and Mrs. Ozdemir fled from Turkey to Islington in the 1980s. After resisting unjust deportation, they had a child named Gulcin.

Today, Gulcin is one of many local councillors fighting for the next generation by making Islington a more inclusive and welcoming place to live. Image
From local forums to tenants' associations, charities to community gardens, and women’s centres to well-being cafes, thank you to all those who have devoted their lives to building a safer, kinder and fairer borough. Image
Diversity is our strength. I have experienced so much joy at countless celebrations in Islington, including those for Christmas, Ramadan, Chanukah, Diwali and many more.

Ultimately, it is the quiet & unremarkable acts of neighbourliness that sustain us all.
You learn a lot on a picket line — thank you Islington North for a priceless education.

My tenure began with the miners’ strike in 1984. Our borough raised thousands of pounds in support.

To this day, people in Islington stand by striking workers, wherever they are. Image
Easily one of the most heartening parts of my work is visiting schools to chat with teachers and students.

There is creativity in all of us — empowering the next generation is our best chance of building a more hopeful, liveable and joyful future. Image
Today is a normal day: casework in the morning, meetings with councillors and a school visit in the afternoon, and a local fundraiser in the evening.

It has been an honour representing the people of Islington North. With your support, that is what I’ll continue to do. Image

On International Women's Day, let's remember the bravery of those who have changed the world through protest:
On this day in 1914, Sylvia Pankhurst was arrested in London while marching for women’s suffrage.

Sylvia also fought for workers’ rights, anti-fascism, anti-imperialism & peace.

If she were alive today, the Tories’ anti-protest Bill would put her at risk of arrest once more.
In 1956, 20,000 women marched in Pretoria to protest “Pass Laws” which restricted the movement of Black people in South Africa.

The women sang together: “You strike a woman, you strike a rock.”

After a long and continued struggle, the Pass Laws were repealed in 1986.

The Forde Report casts an important light on events in the Labour Party in recent years.

My election as leader in 2015 was a major shock in British politics.

It wasn’t about me, but a popular demand for anti-austerity politics following the 2008 financial crisis and 35 years of market fundamentalism.
Despite overwhelming support from members and affiliates, powerful groups in the party found that change hard to come to terms with.

This led to a conflict in Labour that created a toxic environment, which the Forde Report lays bare.

This week, @Amnesty released its comprehensive report into the Israeli government’s treatment of Palestinian people in Israel and the occupied territories, as well as refugees displaced by conflict and violence across the Middle East.
Leading global democracies, such as the UK, US and European Union, who have all too often walked by on the other side when the plight of the Palestinian people is laid bare in the international media, or tirelessly campaigned on by organisations such as @PSCupdates and @hrw.
There must be an urgent effort from world leaders and governments to hold the Israeli government to account for their despicable treatment of Palestinians, to end the apartheid and bring peace to the region, with justice, dignity and the guarantee of equal human rights for all.

My statement 👉 “The bomb attack on Liverpool Women’s Hospital on Remembrance Sunday was a horrific crime, which could have killed or maimed countless victims, including new mothers and their babies.
3/5 "Councillor Paul Nickerson’s photoshopped Twitter post about me failed to understand the seriousness of the threat and did a disservice to all those affected by the attack and their loved ones.

Print too often sets the broadcast agenda, even though it is wedded so firmly to the Tories politically and to corporate interests more generally.

Just because it's on the front page of The Sun or the Mail doesn't automatically make it news. #ChangeTheMedia
We must break the stranglehold of elite power and billionaire domination over large parts of our media.

Just three companies control 71% of national newspaper circulation and 5 companies control 81% of local newspaper circulation.
For all the worry about new forms of fake news, most people think our newspapers churn out fake news day in, day out.

It’s hardly a surprise in the last 4 years one political earthquake after another has been missed by most of our media.
