1/13 Trans people face significant injustices, discrimination & violence (the latter mostly by men). The long wait for NHS-based medical/surgical transition & encountering uninformed medical staff who can obstruct /delay care also happens.

2/13 But the answer isn’t to demand access to women’s spaces & services. Instead, why not lobby for better trans healthcare, trans services & safer social spaces for trans people? Trans people have the same basic human rights as the rest of us & are protected by the GRA.

3/13 The fight for trans rights cannot come at the expense of the hard-won rights of women & girls, who make up just over 50% of the world’s population, yet 4/5ths of the violence against them is by men. Nor can it come at the expense of silencing free speech, debate & dissent.

4/13 In my view, your self-perception, sexuality, what you wish to wear or call yourself, shouldn’t be dictated by your natal sex or gender stereotypes. But insisting that transwomen are the same as biological women goes against the stated goal of achieving equality. Examples…

5/13 Trans activists’ push for “Gender neutral” language means women cannot describe themselves using the very word that describes them. It’s being replaced by aggregates of body parts & their function - “menstruators”, “chest feeders”,“uterus havers”, “birthing people”.

6/13 However unintended it may be, gender ideology infringes on women’s & rights & opportunities. Platforming transwomen like Caitlyn Jenner & Fae Johnston for C4’s Diversity lectures and Int Women’s Day profile respectively, robs women of platforms to have their voices heard.

7/13 Transwomen like Lia Thomas & Laurel Hubbard (who already have the head-start that comes with having gone through full male puberty) beating female athletes robs young girls of their rightful awards, which often are their only access to scholarships and/or social mobility.

8/13 Choosing Philip “Pips” Bunce, a man who started cross-dressing in his middle age, for “50 Women in Finance”Award ignores the professional advantage he’s already gained over a female colleague, when he rose up the career ladder as a man, while his wife looked after the kids.

9/13 Replacing “women” with “those with cervix/uterus” in healthcare literature can mean women losing out on vital cancer surveillance / clinical interventions as many women are unfamiliar with what a cervix / uterus is, including those who speak English as a second language.

11/13 The drive to make existing public loos “gender neutral” impacts only women, as they can’t use urinals (unless they’re transwomen with intact male genitalia). Men get quick access to gents’ whilst women & kids (often accompanying their mothers to the ladies’) face delays.

12/13 Basing data collection in the criminal justice system on one’s chosen gender (and not biological sex) skews crime figures, falsely representing a larger proportion of women as being the perpetrators of sexual and/or domestic violence & paedophilia when this isn’t the case

13/13 Arguing for sex-based rights & evidence-based healthcare for gender-dysphoric kids is NOT #Transphobic or being a bad doctor. With my patients (trans or not), I help them as best as I can, with evidence-based practice, regardless or their individual life choices. End of🧵
