A 🧵on what is sex & why its accurate recording is crucial to clinical safety @NHSEngland. I’m not making a philosophical or political argument, but a scientific one. Our biology, physiology & pharmacology doesn’t care if a man wants to be called a woman & vice versa. 1/24
Humans are born (not assigned) either male or female. Sex is determined at conception when an X ovum is fertilized with either an X or Y sperm cell. Every single healthy nucleated cell in the human body has 46 sex-specific XY chromosomes (male) or XX chromosomes (female). 2/24

A 🧵on the implications of hastily amending sex-based laws, and why the popular, quick-fix suggestions may not be the best ones. My recent interactions with @eyre_ann, @lascapigliata8 @IMissHitchSlaps & @exxsterr made me want to read further on the GRA 2004 & the EA 2010 1/24
During this, I found some phenomenal women on Twitter, who I can only describe as war-veterans in the fight to safeguard women & children’s rights. The brilliant legal analysis by @AlessandraAster @NoXYinXXprisons @wwwritingclub left me in no doubt as to which side I’m on. 2/24

2/13 But the answer isn’t to demand access to women’s spaces & services. Instead, why not lobby for better trans healthcare, trans services & safer social spaces for trans people? Trans people have the same basic human rights as the rest of us & are protected by the GRA.
