Frederick Guthrie synthesized it in 1860 but not the first to do it but was among the first to document its toxic effects with his team of medical researchers who noticed it destroyed lymphatic tissue and bone marrow (that was just after WWI)

The results of the researchers were compiled at the end of WWI... when they had the proof that the weapon was able to kill... and that gas was first waged by the Germans and then used by both sides during WWI. That weapon caused 1,205,655 injuries (of which 91,198 were fatal)

and 91,198 fatalities (of which 91,198 were preventable). This agent’s toxicity increases with increasing doses.

And when WWII started, the production of the mustard gas which was produced in the USA, was skipped to Europe...

in case Germany deployed the gas on Allied troops. At that time, the gas had been banned by the Geneva convention and could only be used in retaliation.

But something happened on December 2nd, 1943. Germans bombed the allied port of Bari in Italy and hit American ships,

releasing their secret cargo into the bay : 2,000 bombs filled with mustard gas 😈

American soldiers now were being sacrificed. The sailors on board the burning ships jumped into the water and met the yellowish sludge from the released mustard gas 😡😡😡and of course...

it has always been highly classified !

In his diary, Doctor Stewart Alexander described the suffering of the sailors...and performed medical forensics on the bizarre circumstances since the Americans didn't want to give information...

and in 1945 as the first Director of the New Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He gained national fame as the leader of the war on cancer !
