Comics used to be healthy, the industry promoted quality work, and the ecosystem, besides being more extensive, was relatively more focused; people knew they were there to make comics.
yes politics at the office existed, but the Modus operandi was making comics that could sell twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
But after the comics crash in the 90s, comics failed to learn the lessons about distribution & selling product & would lean into social politics & major media.
& the focused on a more feminine demographic
Once you get to 2014; all new hires are dirt-cheap social justice kids
model changed from making quality comics to sell more comics; to making cheap-enough comics to barely stay afloat & avoid questions via virtue signals
by the 2010s, pleasing ur peers meant something fundamentally different than it had before
which isn't to say lefty or social justice comics would never sell, or that they aren't sometimes good topics;
but it masked the decay of the industry & so a ton of writers & artists invested into comics only to learn the big 2 & every other comics company were dead broke
Tom King does sell issues, so it's not impossible for a leftwing creator at DC to sell some issues;
But in general, the social justice pandering could cover up the generally poor quality of most of the new comics output
For a long time in comics news media, criticism of someone like Vita Ayala meant you were a bad person.
you weren't allowed to notice she never sells; that's what I mean, modern cultural politics as a cover for poorly made & worse selling comics
Until just recently that is
we have now entered the bankruptcy & collapse phase of the comics industry & there's no way we can pretend anymore the industry isn't in self-destruction mode
didn't have to me this way, if the industry learned & transformed after the 90s crash it might still be healthy today
Unless you live in California or New York most Americans believe & understand discussions about sex isn't appropriate til at least 10 or 11 years old
How is that different from the LGBTQ conversation, at least from the perspective of a parent
It seems to me once again that so much of this enforced ultra-progressive orthodoxy isn't about listening or representing the real people they claim to represent
It's about having a flag to beat your enemies down with
@Kneon folks who don't work in news don't quite understand how thin the margins are at places like CBR even when times were good
Even Gawker at its peak, to hit even an average salary a writer be cranking out 6 to 12 articles every day
CBR never had Gawker money & it's much less now
@Kneon Which is why I've always said that so much of the wokeness from outlets like Kotaku or Polygon or CBR is as much about click-through strategy as any principled belief
Like there are plenty of true believers, but they were allowed cuz companies thought it would turn a profit
@Kneon But now, not even hate clicks can save your website;
This is why even big sites like CNET are turning what used to be entry-level writer work & are instead using AI to do those jobs
It's a very bleak time right now to be an entertainment writer
i don't think it's fair to say we are leaving a culture of thrift; thrift only works if you can afford to do it;
inflation is so bad most food products are double waht they were just 2 years ago; a can of whipped cream costs $8 where I live; whereas it was $3 two years ago
my family hasn't bought a luxury item of any kind since february; i hardly can afford a game now & then;
yet my medical debt & private debt exploded yet I'm not purchasing more stuff; we are just trying to tread water where we are at
conservatives often lean into the idea that people, especially Millennials & Gen Z are spending all this extra income on buying needless expensive stuff
while i'm sure that's true for some people; in my hometown & neighborhood we are just trying to get by & that hasn't changed
juvenile behavior & it would be funny if they didn't use their energy to take the food out of the mouths of folk's children
if anything positive comes out the downfall of these sites is that people like @erikkain & @GenePark will stick around while these sobs leave the industry
I don't have a problem with game journos for being left-wing or right-wing or no wing at all
what i cannot stand is journos using their energy to ruin the careers & lives of other people in news
