anyhoo, i build my cover letter and resume in Google Slides instead of InDesign (my usual program of choice) and really love how it turned out!

has anyone else used Google Slides for multi-page PDFs?? is this something ya'll would wanna learn how to do?? 👀 Image
as you know i'm in the midst of the #writersstrike, meaning my tv work is on hold. so in planning ahead i applied for a part-time teaching gig. i'm excited!

so in the spirit of teaching let's walk through how i built this multi-page PDF in google slides! Image
First, what is Google Slides? Well it’s Google’s version of PowerPoint but WAY BETTER
the main reason I prefer Google Slides over PowerPoint is it's cloud based & easily collaborative. So you can work on it from anywhere, and have multiple authors updating elements of the presentation/deck without saving multiple drafts. GIFs & video are also way easier to add. ImageImage
ok. on to the good stuff. when you open Google Slides, by default your presentation is going to be landscape/widescreen (16:9) So I started by doing a custom page set up of 8.5 x 11 so my slides/pages are portrait ImageImage
Google slides comes with a bunch of pre-set templates that can be used to lay out text and images. I skip them in favor of building my own layouts. Image
how do you build a layout? Things to keep in mind: type hierarchy & grid. You draw attn to important info with size & font style. Less is more, stick to one clean font, nothing script. Don't get too fancy. All ya need is a few images and some text. White space is your friend! ImageImage
I looked up a few different resumes as inspo and then planned my layouts accordingly. ImageImage
FYI circling back to say there IS a cloud based version of PowerPoint i just like the Google slides version more, use whatever works for you!
some fun deets! I did a film strip of pix for my cover letter bc i thought it was a fun way to "preview" my resume/portfolio. i'm all for SHOW not tell. you don't need to go as photo heavy (or at all) but if you have an image that's related to your application, why not?? ImageImage
i also linked my social stats with these cute little social icons i found on Pinterest.

pro-tip: search "keyword" + png or white background for icons/graphics to add to your docs. ImageImage
once you're done laying out & updating the deets of your resume, just download your slides as a PDF and you're good to go! Image

as a former YouTuber this is an easy one. many creators complain about YouTube’s ad revenue structure & how unreliable it is. that’s why many of us left! By uploading to their site (for free) you are agreeing to their TOS. You are not being contracted as an employee
The “adoocalypse” made it incredibly difficult for full time creators to make a living off their content bc YouTube gave advertisers more control over where their ads ran, thus making it harder to have your content monetized.

It’s clear too many of you don’t understand the difference between an employment CONTRACT & terms of service. They’re not the same thing! Contract = agreed upon by both parties.

Terms of service = one party sets the rules, other party must abide by set rules to use the SERVICE

The way y’all continue to make any Black woman w a public profile your punching bag if she don’t speak on/represent/fix every damn issue. fucking exhausting.
getting to a place of accepting & loving yourself requires accepting that not everyone will like you. but one of the most stunning realizations as a “public” person is that there are folks who will turn not liking you into a hobby. Image
this is especially true for Black women. in the past week alone we've seen it as Quinta was accused of being partially responsible for writer's unfair salaries. And Lizzo being accused of "turning her back" on fat fans bc some speculated she's lost weight.

there isn’t an easy answer bc every show is different. But tv shows generally have a writers room vs 1 person or a team writing a feature. on a scripted show writers come in w pitches, the whole room contributes ideas & the showrunner assigns episodes accordingly.
The pay is diff bc the work is different. a season of tv is anywhere from 8-22 hr or half eps vs a 90-120 min feature. the timing varies for both depending on the scope of the work (ie. Sketch, late night, sitcom, procedural, drama, multi cam, single cam, limited series etc)
Also in a writers room there are a number of different levels of writer (staff, story editor, exec story editor, co-producer, producer, co exec, exec & showrunner) pay is determined by what level you’re at & the level you’re at is based on experience & the studios budget

When a show like the Bear is only given a NINE WEEK mini room, it hurts everyone on staff. It means the showrunner has to rewrite eps alone, writers are paid less & it e writers aren’t able to go to set & learn how to produce or help with rewrites. No showrunner wants this
the WGA is fighting for ALL WRITERS. But especially new writers! A first time staff writer on a hit show like the Bear should be able to pay their rent! Currently staff writers don’t get script fees. The showrunner doesn’t decide that! It’s baked into the AMPTP contract

as a queer Black woman from FL, it is terrifying watching DeSantis & his cronies make life harder for queer folks, women & femmes in my home state. Make no mistake DeSantis is using FL as a testing ground for his future presidency.

i sincerely don't wish you any physical harm or danger, & i hope no one has threatened you or made you feel unsafe @OfficialSampson but the discomfort you're feeling isn't bc of pronouns. you're experiencing pushback bc you equated trans folks being misgendered w "scary"
as i said earlier, i can only imagine your mentions are full of all sorts of responses that are rightfully giving you pause. my hope is that you can see that the upset you're hearing is coming from a genuine place of fear, hurt & concern. sometimes we need to hear anger to learn
