All abortion laws are anti abortion at their core. Abortion is exceptionalised because at heart most people still believe the pregnant person is sulliedand the pregnancy is a perfect new being. They forget to account for the full affect and interdependence of the pregnant person
The failures in this case are of a medical system that is being stretched to uselessness. England currently has a THREE WEEK delay in consultation times for abortion in some areas. In England that three weeks can make a big difference to access. The service is being undermined…
Right in front of our noses with underfunding and understaffing and lack of widespread training for post 12/13 weeks. Abortion has always been a necessary part of reproductive healthcare. England is now operating under the most right wing government in living memory…
Attacks on abortion are coming openly via strategic litigation and subtly vis under-resourcing and lack of training. This is under the watch of the outliers of parliament who are anti abortion now in ministerial positions. This is all ideology. The same actors are anti trans…
Anti migrant and anti National Health Service. This particular recent case of exemplifies the failings in support for parents with kids with special needs, the failures of Covid and childcare support the failures of the gutted NHS and the over enthusiasm to punish women.
It’s a lesson in why intersectionality is important. It’s a sorry indictment of the criminal justice system, who does it serve? Should it not be punishing the systems that meant she wasn’t seen sooner?
Abortion is supposed to be protected emergency 🚨 healthcare acc to @WHO
The relentless @stellacreasy et al are right to push for full decriminalisation and have been for a while. The law in Northern Ireland is verbatim from the recommendations of a United Nations human rights inquiry that activists forced to happen. It sets out the MINIMUM standards
And part of that includes CEDAWs global recommendations to remove all
Criminal sanctions for anyone accessing abortion. However for the countries that do retain those sanctions guess who need to be at the forefront of civil disobedience in order to protect abortion seekers?
That’s right, medical staff. I would want my medical staff to have some compassion and clemency towards someone who was forced through lockdown to live with an ex partner whilst working and looking after three children, one with special needs, and then finds out they’re pregnant
Medical staff routinely assist people who have overdosed (as they should) and their primary concern isn’t supposed to be arresting them for possession even though there is the clear danger to the persons life, we’ve begun to understand this a little better (not perfect) for drugs
We need to understand that it is impossible to legislate for exceptional circumstances because new ones will keep happening, this is why #decriminalisation of abortion is so fundamental- across the globe - Drs collude with police and religious leaders to punish abortion seekers Image
For those who haven’t read it - the CEDAW report which includes the requirement for decriminalisation ohchr.org/en/press-relea… Image
Also note that the British Government added in a clause to punish medically trained people that act outside of their guidelines in NI - in direct contradiction to the recommendations of CEDAW. When we pointed this and a few other odd shutting down of recs to NIO we were told:
“You can’t have it better than England” (directly to our faces) colonialism at its finest but also a signal they were reluctant to bring England in line with our better (on paper) framework and instead it’s always a race to see what minimum standards they can get away with
Anyone who has been pregnant willingly knows the physical and mental cost of pregnancy and labour (regardless of the ensuing lifetime’s labour). If someone doesn’t want to be pregnant, every day before it ends is mental and physical torture. Pregnancy isn’t some benign experience
Pregnancy comes with health risks, all of which are exacerbated in a health system on its knees and losing midwives hand over fist. For the first time in ~ fifty years the abortion rate is going up and safety rates for pregnancy are going down. This is all related to Tory govt
Because they are ideologically opposed to compassion and care unless you can pay a giant wad for it, privately. Abortions are a necessity - see @WHO guidelines who.int/news/item/09-0… Image
