Last night after the show a friend and I were verbally & physically assaulted at @PhebesNYC by a drunk girl who I only assume was an NYU student with a fake ID. It was traumatic, but I wasn’t about to be victimized. Not after starring in a show I wrote about not being victimized.
It started when she grabbed me from behind with both hands and pushed me away from the bar yelling “excuse me I need to get a drink!” I turned right back around and bumped her ass out the way with my hips. She was stunned and looked at me wide eyed: "what are you doing!?”
“What are YOU doing?!” I asked back, quite sincerely.
“You pushed me!” She squealed.
“You pushed ME,” I reminded her.
She looked around and saw everyone was staring at her. And then the white girl tears started to well up and we all watched as the perpetrator played victim…
“I said excuse me,” she pleaded
Everyone around me just shook their heads.
“You need to go find another place at the bar” I told her.
She looked at me in that aghast way that only a young white woman who has never been told no can look at a person. Then she stormed off…
She pushed her way through the bar, which—mind you—WAS NOT CROWDED, and continued to put her hands on people. The bartender could have asked her to leave (or
asked to see her ID). He saw it go down. It wasn’t just me and my friends, other folks at the bar clocked her behavior.
So then she tries to move a stool that my friend was holding for HIS MOTHER and this little miss has the gall to say, in front of my friend’s mom, “oh really the old hag needs to sit?”
I was not present for this part but from what I gather her friends wrangled her away.
I went back to my previously interrupted conversation but saw little miss and her posee make their way out. Suddenly, she turns around and comes back inside the bar, runs up to my friend, hits him full force with both hands, then races out of the bar!
Well naturally I follow…
…outside to confront her.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?”
Her friends try to defend her as their car arrives. "He pushed her!"
I correct them “No, SHE pushed him, she was pushing everyone around in there." Then I look her dead in the eye, “You're messy and it's not cute.”
For a second I can see her actually hear me, then I catch her lizard brain take over. Snap. Literally a sideways blink.
“Whatever, sir or ma’am or whatever you are"
There it is.
At this point her friends know she’s fucked up.
I simply ask, “What?”
And she says it again
I look at her calmly. "get in the car.”
She says it again, and now I’m approaching her squad with with death-ray eyes. One of her fuckboy buddies steps in front of me, excusing her. "She's just a kid"
Now I’m yelling, “GET IN THE CAR!”
She gets in the car and fuckboy’s like-
“She’s in the car!”
But I’m not done. “Now YOU get in the car!” I yell, straight mom-loading these kids into their black suv. I was assertive and threatening but very controlled.
But then little miss says it again, and the fuckboys are like "whoa!" trying to get her to shut up.
So now I’m holding the door of this Escalade wide open, packing up these children, and another young woman in the gang starts calling me sir and drag-queen.
At this point, according to witnesses, I’m visibly shaking.
I make eye contact with the Uber driver….
He’s wearing a mask but I can see his whole life story in his eyes. Everything he’s seen and been through to get to this night, everything he’ll have to see and get through from here. I see him look at me with compassion. His eyes seem to plead to my better nature, “please, no.”
And i wanted to slam that door on that fuckboys hand, or lean back and kick him all the way in the face, or harpoon them all with one long skewer like a shish kebab of NYU shitheads.
I stand there shaking, holding that door for a solid minute. Breathing heavy, staring them down.
Then, with all of my might and power I lean into their Uber and scream: "ARE YOU SCARED?!?”
And a second time: “ARE YOU SCARED!!!”
I’m screaming in their faces and the fuckboys are cowering into one another, smashing little Miss up against the other door.
They are terrified.
I made them fear for their lives.
It was not fun for them.
They thought it was funny up til then, but I could see in their body language and in their eyes GENUINE TERROR, a genuine fear for their physical safety.
There you go. Now you know. Now you have a TASTE of what it’s like
They saw in my eyes and in my shaking body gripping the door of their car that I could have ripped out their throats with my bare hands and gnawed on their windpipes with my back teeth like rawhide.
Instead I spit their venom back at them. Rage and fire and hatred. And violence.
Pure violence in my voice.
I skinned them alive with dragon fire. And then I walked away. Left the door open and everything.
I think I was smiling. I remember I laughed. But they were not laughing. They knew the harm they inflicted, and they will remember it with shame forever.
Here’s my #nepobaby story if anyone wants to make a graphic. My great great uncle Nicholas Nayfack (1909-1958) signed Judy Garland to MGM & produced 2 iconic films, Border Incident (1949) & Forbidden Planet (1956). Family lore, he wouldn’t give my great uncle Julie a job.
On my mom’s side, her grandfather Alec Roseman (who I’m dead named after) was a scenic carpenter who worked on all the old motion picture lots. Family lore is he wasn’t a great guy. When his wife died he left my papa and his other kids in a Jewish orphanage Boyle Heights (1930s).
My mom’s maternal grandparents ran a dry cleaners in River Forest, IL, and set up shop again in Hollywood when my grandma met my papa at UCLA. Family lore tells that the house they lived in belonged to a concert pianist first, with a living room designed to be a music parlor…
Today my friend got fired from #TraderJoes when he recommended enhanced COVID-safe practices. He’s been working there all through the pandemic, but I guess his labor (and his health) aren’t essential to corporate. Support Crew for a @TraderJoesUnion!
Here is #TraderJoes response to @BenBonnema’s letter. It’s pathetic. Instead of addressing his concerns as an employee they signal out two of his recommendations for keeping employees safe as contrary to the value of the company and fire him. Trader Joe’s is trash.
Shame on @nbc. Y’all sign my checks as of late but I‘m disgusted by my home network giving Trump a platform for fear mongering, bigotry & disinformation. Don’t praise yourselves for putting a trans woman on primetime then give a platform to someone who wants to abolish my rights.
Honestly shame on @ABC and @nbc, this echo chamber of rhetoric is a root problem in America. These days leading up to the election should be about the exchange and comparison of ideas and policy, not ratings and stoking division. @realDonaldTrump & @JoeBiden should #debate.
